93 Metro Cutting Out; Engine Cuts out in 5th Gear Only

I have a 1993 Geo that is having problems when it gets to higher speeds. The car has been fine up to this point with the exception of burning oil. The car just started this problem out of nowhere. When the car moves through the gears id does fine until 5th gear. In fifth the engine is acting like it is cutting out and not getting enough fuel. The forms that I have read have shown the problem to be O2 sensor to TPS to spark plugs. The car has a newer rotor cap and wires, fresh fuel filter and newer plugs.

Any Thoughts?

Dareal - Does the car show this same issue in a different gear? For instance if you are traveling 55mph in 5th gear and the car is "cutting out" what happens if you shift to 4th but hold the same 55mph?

Have you done a compression check?

IDMETRO thanks for the reply... It is only cutting out in fifth gear when I cuts out u can downshift and it no longer cuts out.

No compression test yet

Have you checked to see if there are any codes stored in the ecm? What trans ratio do you have? 4.39, 4.10, or 3.79? Does it always do it in 5th gear no matter if going on flat ground, up or down hills? What RPM and speed does it start?

I have not had the chance to check codes did it on way to work this morning and I do not get off till tomorrow morning. I am not sure the gear ratio but can find out.. the speed is right around 60 and doesnt matter what ground flat or not but 4th gear same rpm and higher doesn't do it

Fuel injector might be going bad. Read through my thread from last year, and see if it sounds familiar.

So... I did the compression test and it looks like I'm at 80 120 120 one of the plugs was bent and had no gap... not sure how that happened but its running okay with new plugs... but still burning a lot of oil. I am thinking that i see a rebuild in my near future.

I would be planning on getting another engine to rebuild and get done before this one got too bad. Unless you have something else you can drive while rebuild the engine in the car.

I've got a couple cars I can drive while this one is down or buys spare motor to rebuild and put in... will a 91 motor fit a 93 geo?

Yes it will fit. You are talking about both being a 3 cylinder right? If you car is a 93 then you need to use just the block and head from the 91 and use all the original bolt on stuff. Intake, throttle body, distributor ect.
