I have a 93 3\5 hatch ..Some times on long straight hwys at 65mph ..Not slower or faster but exactly 60-65 it'll start burning a large amount of oil ..Blowing tons of black smoke out the pipe. I pump the gas n it clears up ..What the hell is doing that.. Motor has great compression runs strong..Any ideas??

You are probably experiencing what's referred to as the Metro "oil fart". Lots of info about it here. Google oil fart +geo metro forum.

Have to agree with Car Nut, but..........Black smoke?

Hmmm, two issues here; 1) o/f's are white(ish). 2) in all the work I did with o/f's there was no way to stop one, once the head was full of oil, it had to run its course.

What level of routine maintenance do you keep? How often do you change your oil? if it is an o/f, you will burn a "measurable" amount of oil with each occurrence. I was able to collect farts as small as a couple tablespoons, and as large as a quart.

have you pulled the plugs? What do they look like? do they all look the same? How long has it been since you last replaced your dist cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires? Last oil and filter change?

How long has this been going on? any CEL's? Do you notice the oil level drop after a couple episodes?

To rule out o/f's you can build a simple fart collector. I had one that I was sending out for folks to use, but it never got back to me. you can see one in the o/f thread, or I can email you a diagram. If you need a diagram please pm me.

because of the black smoke I am pulled toward a fuel issue, especially since you can get it to stop by fluttering the gas peddle. when was your last emissions test? Have you run that "cat cleaner"?

Oil farts are common, but as Car Nut and sphenicie pointed out, they're usually a white cloud with a slight blueish tinge. Black cloud like a diesel means pig rich, could be your fuel injector is sticking open?

You should have oil pooled in the air cleaner housing if it is oil farting. There will also be a nice soaking of oil in the underside of the air cleaner where the PCV tube enters the housing.

I have been there, done that with oil farts. I had one that could stop traffic an interstate highway. Compression was decent and the thing ran great and got excellent mileage on the gas but not so much with the oil.

Once I had a replacement engine on hand I was driving and it started to oil fart on the highway. I was pissed at the thing doing this all the time so just kept it floored for several miles and it sputtered and smoked like mad the entire time. I pulled off at the next exit and added a quart of oil without even looking at the level first. I then checked the level and it was above the add mark but not by more than a hair.

If you let off the gas and this stops, you have reduced the load on the engine and allowed the oil in the valve cover to drain back. If you keep into it and really give it hell and it keeps doing this, it sounds like an oil fart.

Yes, you should see MEASURABLE oil use after just one or two of these occurrences if it is actually an oil fart.
