Hi guys, I have torn apart the dash so I can replace my leaky heater core and I figure while I'm in there, might as well replace all of the foam that has disintegrated. My question is, is the opening in the center of this blend door supposed to be totally closed off with foam? Not sure what it actually looked like when it was new. Also, what is the purpose of the foam around the perimeter of the door? It doesn't seem like it does anything to me?

Good question about the opening in the flap. Right, or wrong, I sealed mine off with Gorilla Tape.![]() As for the random foam, I think it does seal somewhat. It could be more of a de-rattler to keep the plastic pieces from bouncing against each other. ![]() I tore mine down, to the bare bones too, to clean & lube the whole works. ![]() Re-foamed everything. ![]() ![]() Now everything is nice, snug, and puts out decent heat. ![]() Did everything as detailed as possible. I would prefer not to go down there again for a long time. You know what it's like getting there.

You know, that Snowfish character is quite a guy! Imagine tearing your whole under-dash apart just to answer a fellow GMFer's question!!

The foam in the little center flap within the bigger flap is as Snowfish said, is used to dampen the movement. Also, when you move the recirculate lever from open to closed position, the flap will briefly swing open, to relieve any air pressure that might remain in the blower housing to make the air flow transition smoother. An interesting aspect of the foam in this little flap within the flap that rodents like to chew on it to try to gain access to the car interior. It is too small, luckily, and all the more reason to park your car for extended periods with recirculated lever to a closed position. The perimeter flap foam, when new, will tightly seal/overlap the vent opening frame edges, and this makes the blower fan more effective in delivering as much fresh air as possible from the cowl opening located at the base of the windshield , when the recirculate lever is in the fresh air position. |

Come up with one like that for the heater box assembly and I'll buy them both. |
