I am looking to swap out the 4 speakers in my 1992 Geo Metro 4-door. It has two front speakers by the driver and passenger side dash next to your knees. The other two are on the hatch of the vehicle. Two of the speakers initially did not work when I put in my new head unit (had no head unit when I purchased it, just dangling wires). One randomly began working one day and when I inspected the one on the rear that did not work, I noticed one of the clips that go to the speaker itself had been ripped off at some point. All four of the speakers look very dry rotted and the sound is about what you would expect from 25 year old dry rotted speakers. I am looking upgrade the speakers, but I don't want to go insane and spend a bunch of money. I know how to wire everything but as far as sound quality, ohms, etc. I know little to nothing. I couldn't tell you one speaker / amp / head-unit from the next. Should I invest in an amplifier or better head unit? I am using a cheap $18 head unit off Amazon rite now. What speakers would you recommend for my situation? |

If you want to have something cheap that is decent, you might try Pyle 4" speakers. There is a link in the thread Helpful Stereo Links, in my signature. There's quite a bit of info, there, and if you need further help, don't hesitate to ask! |

For something simple like that I wouldn't go to the extent of getting an amplifier, correct? |

Correct... amplifier is mostly for high end, ultraloud gear. these little indash units can fill your car with sound if you have efficient speakers at 4 ohm impedance... Speakers that will fit in the OEM position is what you really want to find... take the dead ones out and measure up. |

Measuring not necessary. 92-94 uses 4" speakers. |

I have personally used these and have been very satisfied with their performance. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009XUMUVU/ref= |

I know the rear speakers on the hatch are in fact 4 inches, but I have yet to check the ones in the dash up front. I will take your word for it. Does it matter that my head unit is just some cheap $18 head unit I got off Amazon? Would you recommend I replace all the old speaker wiring with new wire, or just wire up the speakers to all the old wire? I am going to order the speakers today. |

I've never rewired a car's speaker wiring. I have always used the factory wiring. |

In my experience in my car I had a hard time turning up the radio loud enough to hear over the road noise in my car without the fear of blowing the speakers. The deck in my car was a 50w x 4. I still wasn't satisfied. So I put new 4 inch speakers in the dash and some 6x9's in the back deck on a 4 channel amp. ![]() I also plan on maybe 10 inch sub and maybe a couple more speakers on another amp. |
