I'll try to make this a summary of what happened (occurred this afternoon in 45ish degree temperature in Southern Indiana) Just recently put rebuilt engine in my metro. Filled it up with all the fluids and plugged everything back in. I filled up Radiator with 50/50 antifreeze from Tractor Supply and ran it then topped it off (assumed hoses were empty when engine placed in engine bay and need to run a little. Everything was good. Started it this afternoon and the belt squeeled for a bit but eventually quit and I noticed there was no heat until almost 5 minutes after starting the car. Made it out of town and shut it off at a friends house. Checked the oil and vapor came out of the fill port. Topped it off and went on. About 5 minutes later the cars CHECK ENGINE LIGHT came on and csr was shortly engulfed in steam and I shut it off. Looked and the top of the radiator was cracked and steam was pouring out like crazy. Eventually cooled off and drove back home and as soon as I got home it did it again. (Side note every hose was hot hot after first steam incident if that helps at all. And my temp gauge doesn't work) I know I need a new radiator but what else should I check? Water pump? Hose Blockage? Thanks for reading! |

Could it be that the belt stopped squealing because it came off? |

I had a similar situation right after i bought mine. The PO had messed with the engine mounts and the rear one wasn't installed correctly and left the engine shutting low. As the engine vibrated it pulled on the hoses, which led to a blown radiator when the coolant all leaked out. So make sure there isn't anything like that causing a leak and thus, another blown radiator. FWIW, rockauto.com has radiators for around $80. |
