AC Compressor Issues?

Hello Geometroforum!

I have a 1999 Metro 3cyl 1.0. I heard some squealing about a month ago from the front of my car while it warmed up and didn't make much of it, knew I was going to have to replace some belts just wanted to wait until I had some time on my hands. About a week ago I drove from Seattle to Portland (3 Hour Drive) and when I arrived to Portland just off the freeway I heard a loud grinding noise come the front of my car, it was a loud grinding/humming sort of noise and would only be when I was in neutral. When I got going the noise would stop. I should also note that the car idled a little rougher when there was the grinding noise.

This grinding and squealing has continued up to today, and was usually just when I was starting the car or in idle.

Now I know I should have addressed this immediately but I didn't and drove back to Seattle the next day. Today I was driving around town and smelt something quite unpleasant (rubber burning smell?) I pulled over and opened my hood to find a small amount of white smoke coming from the front bottom right of the car (AC Condenser?). When I got back I propped my metro up and proceeded to take a closer look.

(should also note that I haven't used my AC since October, Seattle is cold enough)

I am not a mechanic, but I've been able to do all repairs through this website and youtube videos. If you know what this is or have any instruction to repair I'd be very appreciative :)

Thank you!!

If it's coming from the AC compressor and you're not running the AC compressor, then the bearing on it is shot. Best to remove the belt from it until you can fix it.
