So the youtuber Brad Majors had two videos.

Geo metro before sound deadening

After Geo metro sound deadening

Has anyone done this? Is it worth it as foam is really cheap.

Is it worth it. I guess for a beater then maybe.

It works great for deadening sound, but it is horrible for rust!!
The water and muck gets trapped behind the foam and it rusts faster than with no foam.

I'm assuming you only use it for internal structures and I guess you have to water proof it somehow.

Plus when you go to fix the rust the foam likes to catch on fire. Some manufacturers do this from the factory and I have had to repair them it is not fun.

i refuse to weld on cars that have taken this abuse. heat from welding causes the foam to produce poisonous gas.

i won't die for any rusted out shit box of a car. ;)

Banging on a panel and saying it "makes a big difference" isn't really very enlightening. Difference in what? If open- or closed-cell foam was an effective noise blocker, you'd expect to find it used in building applications like sound studios.

Here's a good overview to soundproofing: http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/soundproofing-articles/foam-or-fiber-insulation/

well this was me in that video. yes it is true that if you have to weld on it then it does release gasses. BUT i wont be welding on it ( hopefully lol ). it is the best for covering LARGE areas that you need to deaden and make rock hard. you do have to realize that what im doing is NOT for every day use. This car was purchased SOLELY for the purpose of audio competitions and i need the car to be as solid as possible without pouring concrete in it. If i was to be using this as a dedicated daily driver i would just put down butyl mat sound deadener only on the panels. I do not intend on letting ANY water get to these areas unless I develop some level of rust in which case ill probably just fiber fill. this is not the only level of protection and or deadening that this car will see by a long shot lol. this was just solely to make the panels rock hard so that i dont literally shear them in half from vibrations. anywho if you need any info id be more than happy to help as many of these other fine lads have as well.
