Ok so I just bought a little 3cyl metro 1996 for 500 cash. I love my hoopty lol. She's not pretty, but has way more zip than I expected on a 3 cyl and I'm getting 43 mpg. Here's the thing, I know it needs some work because the defroster fan isn't working, but I don't know how to tell if the car never had ac, or if the stuff is there and broken. I know it will lower my mpg, but I live in VA and it gets pretty hot here in the summer for no ac. Also, if it turns out it doesn't have the parts for ac, is that something that can be added or am I just stuck? Thanks! ps- not real car literate hear. I was super proud of myself for replacing the window crank on my own...soooo...just sayin. |

Welcome aboard. If your car has/had a/c there should be a round button on the heater control labeled "a/c". Many 3 cyl Metros did not come with a/c but quite a few did... It can be added later by acquiring all the needed parts from a donor car but installing it is an order of magnitude or two above replacing the window crank. |

You'll also have a compressor located at the passenger side of the lower block, and a condenser fan with canister on the passenger side in the grill area. If there is a black, sheet metal block there, it didn't come with a/c. Edited by GeoStalker, May 3 2017, 09:02 PM.

The condenser is even easier to see than the compressor. If you have it, it looks like your radiator, but twice as wide, with a big fan in front of it on the passenger side. Those window cranks can be tricky, no joke.

Heater fan is very often that the switch has fallen apart. if the inside bits are still there, it can be fixed by strapping it back together with a wire tie. Stiffcheeze has done a very good how to here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/4541259/1/?x=90 Just below the fastest setting of the fan switch is a square A/C button with a tiny light in it. If you have a little grill looking thing in that spot, then your car does not have A/C. |

le sigh....looks like I never had AC. I found a goofy looking but workable solution in a usb powered personal fan that is now hanging from my passenger visor. I may try one of those evaporative cooler personal ac things to see if that helps too. I don't ever have passengers, so I have room to play :). |

this makes total sense, since when I move the switch there's no resistance like it isn't actually touching anything...like a kid's toy. I'll check the link out. Thanks so much! |

Forgot to mention. We have a member, vaguely in your area, who is very knowledgeable about Metros and working on cars. Whether he's willing to help you, I don't know, but it couldn't hurt to contact metroschultz. |
