Decided next car; Still years away though

Seeking the Science of MPG

Still years away from happening, but I've made a decision and can stop aimlessly pondering what to get!

There were six in the running:

Geo Metro: Because I do totally like my car!

Chevy Prizm: What my original car research 3 years ago showed to be my best bet. It stayed relevant even as my other original picks like the Neon, Vibe, and SL1 faded away.

Honda Insight: Because it is the all time undisputed KING of MPG.

Mitsu Mirage: I admit I was impressed when I got a brief chance to drive one a little over a month ago. I tend to resist"jumping on the bandwagon" mind you.

Mitsu IMiev: In some ways would totally want one, and in others totally wouldn't. Big downside is it's fighting all manual transmission models, and I don't think I want to give up my clutch pedal. Although shifting from Neutral/Extra Regen/Eco/Drive is still shifting.

Chevy Sonic: Saw a beautiful green sonic at work a while back, and given its decent mpg and push button radio I added it to my potential list.

First off to repeat, I'm 100% metro for several more years. Saving for a house to move out takes precedence over a new car.

So I tried this afternoon to develop a way in numbers to value these 6 contenders equivalently. And believe it or not once I calculated the final totals I felt they were completely accurate!

:ermm: What!?!? Once the "emotional urge to not jump on the bandwagon" was removed look what won by a fair margin! :ermm:

Better yet, having that future daily driver be green will make it more likely that I'll keep my '95 in the rare Licorice Black when it comes time to restore it.
Only six more months until I get the '95 some collector plates, and I start to drive my rustbucket :'( .

Yeah, but, *heavy sigh*, it's not offered in Dragon Green. That has mere seriously reconsidering the possibility of going with the Chevy Sonic for my next ride, instead.

You will dig the Mirage. Buddy and coworker of mine just bought a brand new one last week. "Sunrise Orange".

Not compared to the '01 Hyundai he traded in! :lol My '15 Mirage gets better mileage than my '97 3/5 Metro did, but I got the manual.

You might add the Corolla to your list as it and the Prism are basically the same car. It is like comparing a Metro and a Swift.

For a new car I suggest the Mirage if you really like the Metro. There is also the Spark if you want a small car. Some of the early ones had issues but a new one should be fine.

Then there is the Versa that some seem to prefer over the Mirage.

PTA2PTB, Sure you would want to deal with the DMV and the FAA when you register your car? Although it is quite cool, a 21st century chitty chitty bang bang!

Cobrajet25, I still don't believe they get better mileage. Looking at fuelly many more Metros get over 50 mpg average than Mirages. With the 4.39 and standard cam I can easily hit mid to high 50's commuting and there's only 1 Mirage on fuelly that can compete with that.

cwatkin, look at the data in my image. I don't need you to suggest more to consider. I'm aware of them, but I will give a sentence or two for them as to why.
Corolla, yes, and indeed the 2000-2002 Corolla was offered in a lighter green which I like a little more, but given the choice to buy the same car as a import or as a Chevy I'd choose Chevy. I had convinced my best friend to get a Prizm as some here may know. Over the 20 months he had it I had many chances to drive, ride in, and help him work on it. Although a great reliable car in many ways, I no longer regret not buying one three years ago.

Swift would be fine too. Back in 2014 however although I knew they were identical to a Metro I wouldn't have considered one. At that time I would only buy an american brand.

Spark no, It's a 4 seater coupe and in my opinion an ugly one at that. If I'm going to drive a 4 seater coupe it's a Metro. :metro1

Versa no, If I'm not buying a metro I must have remote power locks. That is seriously one of the biggest things I miss about my '98 Malibu. Just tap the remote, "beep beep" and the doors are unlocked, especially those cold winter days that the locks are half froze up. Don't like their looks that much either.

And one thing that the Mirage has that none of it's competition does is the environmentally friendly R-1234yf refrigerant.

And to save people the hassle of reading it off the picture here's how they scored out of 2500 possible.

WiscoMetro you should install a keyless entry system on your current metro, they're $20 - $25 on ebay. Its pretty simple wiring too.

Leaving it unlocked, as I do, since it, and nothing in it, is worth stealing, is FREE!

Just curious... Why the Sonic 1.8 and not the 1.4? The 1.4 is more reliable, more powerful and more fuel efficient.

I wish... The Elio is a ghost. No matter how much you love or hate them it's plainly evident now that they will never be built.
I just found what I could for the Elios specs and estimated what I couldn't and plugged it in to my table. The Elio scored 2285.1!

This metro I want to keep stock looking for future restoration. I don't want to drill into it adding aftermarket stuff like that, I miss it true but not really a big deal at this point I've just accepted it. A rare few of the mk4 sedans had power locks. If I ever find one of those in the junkyard I might adapt the power lock system to 2 doors and wire it into a aftermarket receiver and remotes.

Leaving it unlocked, as I do

For the first 5 months I had my metro it was always unlocked since the ignition key the PO gave me didn't work in the doors and they had lost the door key. It was indeed never stolen but now that I can lock it I'm going to. :D

Because I want it to be naturally aspirated. I've read too much about turbos failing. They both make 138 HP, and the thought of something spinning 100's of kRPM on really hot surfaces is just :oshit . Also the turbo only adds much functionality when you put your foot into it, and driving how I do it would rarely ever be helpful. I choose to have less that can go wrong.
