@Cobrajet

Yeah, true. And would be tough in the winter since I have no garage. It's going to be sitting on the street when not in use, at least until I can get a duplex...hopefully next year.

@cwatkin

Thanks for the info!! I have the 3 cylinder, I believe. I actually had the car towed from the shop and sent over to a mechanic that is good friends with the guy I bought it from, as a referral. He's quoting me $1200 to get mirrors, do front & back brakes and both brake lines. Said there's a ton more stuff wrong with it. Checking the oil leak tomorrow.

I saw rust underneath, but I don't recall their being gapping holes. Granted, didn't get a full look at the time.

@Woodie

Probably...the Dodge was a gift from my godfather. I still need to pay it back! TANSTAFL. Love the car though. Just wish it got better MPG.

@Murf Thanks!! Happy to be here and very grateful for all the help.

so what's preventing the car from being driven right now the brakes don't work at all? pads are a cinch to install and if you caught it in time the rotors should be good-the rear brakes being shoes don't wear out as fast so there may be some life in them as well-I would throw on some brake pads fix the oil leak which if it's one of the right hand seals should be a snap also-then fix the rest of the stuff at your leasure
when you have a few hours to spare after working all day-doesn't really make sense to go further in debt by paying those outragous mechanic fees so you can keep working to pay off that debt-if it all possible do it yourself and save money and get a mirror at a junkyard or I believe I paid about 30 dollars for a new one on ebay-

Brakes are completely out, which is why it had to be towed. And you're right, mirrors are really cheap!

I should learn how to work on a car through this though, for sure.

well good luck in whatever you do-if I lived closer I would be glad to help out-and the Metro is a great car to learn to wrench on-

The Avenger is actually a really nice car too. I like the classic American styling. Is it a 4 or V6?

I think I was thinking about the Chrysler 200 and not the Avenger. That is the one that is a rolling turd when it comes to reliability and other issues. I was glad to look it up and see it wasn't on the crap list like the 200. https://www.carcomplaints.com/Chrysler/200/2015/

My concern with this Geo is that it was just neglected until it couldn't be driven anymore. Look under the oil fill cap and see what the inside of the valve cover looks like. The rust is the biggest confirmed issue. Odds are it is worse than it looks as it always is.

Sorry about dragging on the response. Got tied up with other stuff and lost track. I picked up the car yesterday from the shop. Guy is really nice. Said he's going to throw in an AC compressor and installation for free. Just need to bring it back on Tuesday.

The mechanic I used fixed the brakes (and bled them), brake lines, rotors, calipers, installed 2 mirrors, spark plugs, fixed the cigarette lighter and changed the AC for $1222! The coolant pump hose popped on my way out the other day, so I took it back and he replaced it.

So the car drives good...cleaned it up a bit yesterday. Taking it for a spin on food deliveries tomorrow. The only thing I hate is the acceleration, but that's something I'll have to get used to considering the engine. Any advice for merging on to the highway? Don't want to get slammed...I know that it's best to stay around 60-65; anything over and the mpg is hampered and car rattles?

While this won't make your car go any faster, it WILL help prevent other people from wanting to ride up on your ass and tailgate you, as though they think they're going to intimidate you into going faster.

Just slap you a big sign like this, in your back window. ;)

LOL! That'll do it. Haha! Already had a couple people ride on my ass while I was taking the car home yesterday. I'm just like, "Great...going to have to deal with this all the time now."

Aggressive, careless drivers do that.

Yeah, was definitely a pain. The other thing too...going to have to get new windshield wipers. Windshield wiper fluid also goes OVER the windows...lmao. Not sure how to fix that.

yours is the 4 cylinder right? should be peppy enough-maybe want to make sure the solenoids are working ok and the auto tranny is working in all 3 forward gears-glad you got a relatively good deal on your repairs-

Here's another option for a sign on the back of a Geo:

Or, if your Metro is rough like mine, you can add this one:

Put a pin in the hole of the sprayer nozzle and you can adjust where it is pointing.
