Hey! My wife's 96 Metro has been making a noise when we run the A/C: - kind of a whirring/squeal - doesn't seem to be under hood; not belts or pulleys...I think - can feel box to right of heater core vibrating in tune with it (under glove box)-- Is this blower? - only happens when A/C turned on - may only start when car is moving...not sure - usually take 30 seconds to 2 minutes to kick in Any thoughts? |

Inside the car the only motorized part in the ac/heating system is the blower fan. Fan motor bearing is probably worn or you have some debris in the fan blades. 3 bolts hold it onto the blower housing. And power connectors plug into the motor as well as a phillips screw which is holding the blower resistor. |

To confirm it is the blower fan making noise, leave the a/c button unpressed and run the fan only.. |

Thanks, Tom–I'll verify tomorrow, but I'm 95% sure it only happens when we engage A/C switch. She left the A/C off (blower only; no cool) for months, I think, and didn't hear it again until she used A/C this week. So, I'm guessing something else? |

The a/c system parts inside the cabin in a metro include the evaporator which should not produce noises other than the odd gurgle or sloshing sound as it drains moisture to the ground during operation. Are you sure the squeal is not emanating from under the hood? Ie. The compressor or drive belt? |

So, I tested today: - sound only comes on when A/C switch engaged; stops when I press it again - happens at idle or when moving, but intermittent, even with A/C on - don't hear much outside the car/under the hood; people on sidewalk didn't look up when I passed - leftmost box under dash area (to right of heater core) vibrates once when I turn off A/C, like something stopped Video: https://goo.gl/photos/jpLnbfMY4PSacvwk8 |

Query: does it matter what speed the blower motor is on?... does it change pitch when selecting different blower motor speeds? have you unpluged the fan motor and turn the a/c button on off with the fan on low?... |

-blower motor speed doesn't affect it; pitch doesn't change - haven't tried unplugging the fan |

sound like the a/c amplifier causing the noise, though it shouldn't...BTW it's that little black box that thats attached to the evap box in your video...try this...detach it from the case, keep it plugged in...it slides upward to release...put your hand on it when you turn on the a/c and see what happens...

Thanks--I'll check that, but I think the amplifier is that flat black box on the front. I think the clunk I feel when I turn off the A/C is the box that the amplifier sits on. Is that the blower? |

Okay ...so, its heater core then box with amplifier and then blower (L-->R)? I can't find a good diagram. |

here are a few links for a dia., it's for a '94 but they didnt change much through out the years... component parts guide: http://pontiacfirefly.com/pdf/Metro_PontiacFirefly_1989-1994.pdf has a good pic second page but it's minus the a/c core: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByZnrvyffe1KX0hJSG95TEY2Ukk/edit |

So...I looked again today. The noise seems to be less in the blower and more in the metal line coming out near there and going thru the firewall, I think. It's hot...assuming it's the return on the coolant? Not sure why it'd be making noise and vibrating...low freon? The compressor isn't making any noise and the A/C blows cold. |
