I would say that the evaporator core has an internal block and is not flowing properly. Which would mean you need an evap core, expansion valve, and a Receiver Drier / Accumulator...just curious, have you put a set of gauges on it yet? if so what are the high and low pressures?

Thanks–I'll have our mechanic look at it next week. I don't have the equipment/gauges to test it myself. I assume I wouldn't be able to replace these components myself, as they involve refrigerant capture and recharging.

Mechanic finally looked at it today: said it was an "air door" in the "air matrix" and the whole thing needed to be replaced. $2,000 This was coming from the desk person, not the mechanic himself. Do you know what he means? It sounds like a diverter flap for the A/C within the ductwork, so I'm assuming it's not critical . Edited by mrmambo, Jun 29 2017, 10:29 AM.

Wow 2k for less than 3hrs. worth of work even if it's the seal going around the evaporator core thats a lot of money...I going to post a reseal of the blower box in geo's garage probably tomorrow, maybe this will help...you should be able to do it yourself with only a few tools and about 3 to 4 hrs. time ...maybe less... http://geometroforum.com/topic/8111407/4/#new |

Thanks, geogonfa! Amazingly detailed write-up. I've read thru it a few times, but will definitely have questions if I do it myself. I've replaced a heater core (what a pain!!) but never done any A/C work. I'm not familiar with the tools/gauges required nor processes like evacuating the system. Can you give me some me idea of what I'll need to purchase, both tools and supplies/parts? Thanks! |

your not going to need special tools to reseal the blower box: just a box blade cutter, 10mm 6 point socket 1/4" drive prefered but can be 3/8" drive, at least a 3" extension and rachet for which ever drive you use, pair of scissors to cut the foam, or order a seal kit from member BBowens ( http://stores.ebay.com/bowens/_i.html?rt=nc&_pgn=2&_ipg=48 ), a small straight blade screw driver, and a phillips ( X head) screw driver... |

But do I need to evacuate and charge the system with special tools if I replace the evaporator? Or are you thinking it's just a seal to/in the blower box? Before you thought there might be a blockage in the evaporator core. I wasn't clear if there's an internal diverter door in the blower box that moves just for the A/C and could be leaking. There are not any vent louvers in the A/C evap box...air always flows through the evap core when the blower is on...I guessing there might be some leaves or crud in the box...pull the Blower box and inspect the Evap core... |

Finally got the diagnosis from the tech—he thinks it's the blend door: "PROBLEM: When A/C button is engaged it makes a high-pitch sound. Check over evaporator and blower motor. DIAGNOSIS: The blend door has warped, letting air pass by it when A/C is engaged. REPAIR: The blend door is discontinued and a suitable replacement could not be located." |

Did he say which blend door?...there are 3...2 in the heater core box, and 1 in the blower motor case...the one in the blower motor case is the one mentioned in geo's garage...Try this one first because you don't have to remove anything that requires specialty tools or removing the dash...as far as the blend doors warping, it's hard to believe because they are metal, usually what happens is the foam seals deteriorate causing the blown air to by-pass... Now just another question...if you work the HVAC levers on the dash does the noise go away in certain settings? as far as the blend door not being found...#13 in the photo... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Heater-Blower-Assy-Rebuild-Kit-Geo-Metro-Suzuki-Swift-89-2001-New-Genuine-OE-/222383353269 Edited by geogonfa, Jul 3 2017, 09:52 AM.

No, the mechanic didn't indicate which blend door. I'm starting to wonder if that's really the issue, based on your guidance. I took it out today (it's my wife's car) and tried every configuration of moving the HVAC controls, as you suggested; nothing had a impact except turning the A/C on or off. The sound is unaffected by if the car is moving or not, the engine speed, the blower speed, etc. It also seems to fade away randomly while driving and then randomly come back, often disappearing for 5-10 minutes at a time. Based on that I'm wondering if it's something mechanical/within the AC system, as it doesn't vary the way I'd think an air seal leak might. I'm thinking of going to an AC shop who specializes in this work. Edited by mrmambo, Jul 16 2017, 10:07 AM.
