Driving home last night my 1996 Geo Metro's lights started dimming. By the time I got home they were gone. Nothing. Prior to this about a week ago parts of the belt had come off. I raised the hood it was hotter than usual around the belt area and I noticed the belt was really skinny now. Could this cause altenator to die or am I gonna have to buy a new alternator

If the alternator isn't getting spun fast enough it won't charge. First off, you need to find out why the belt was getting chewed up in the first place. Check for play in the bearings in the alternator, check to make sure the crank pulley is good and tight, and most important, check the water pump for play in the bearings. The majority of the time the water pump is the culprit. Also, make sure all the bolts on the alternator bracket are tight. Loose bolts will make the alternator hang crooked and it doesn't take much to eat up a little 3-groove belt, or any belt for that matter.

If you have concerns about the alternator, take it off and take it to an auto parts store. Most stores will check them for free.

Far more importantly, that same belt runs the water pump. Find out what's wrong and fix it before you drive another mile. You could destroy your engine in about five miles.

I replaced the belt and it started right up with a jump. Headlights working again. But the belt is still squalling horribly. It stops if I push in clutch or after I drive a couple miles. . Since last August I have replaced the water pump The radiator and hoses. The fan, sending unit, thermostat, fan switch, fuses. All due to overheating problem.Car ran fine for a couple of months. Then it started overheating again. I flushed the radiator and put some stuff in for cracked block. Still overheating. I could drive about 10 Miles and would have to stop and add water. Then one day it just stopped overheating. I don't have AC because when I put a belt on it gets to hot and burns it up, and the car won't start again until I remove the belt. About a month ago my car got to the point that it wouldn't start without a jump. Then it died and wouldn't start at all. Had battery , starter, and alternator checked. All good. Replaced distributor cap. Started again. Two days later nothing. Wouldn't even click. I checked everything. Brought alternator back in for recheck. Good. I just couldn't accept that me and my car were over. I went to the junkyard and purchased another alternator. Apparently a ground wire had shorted out the one I had. It started right up. Now this with the belt. And my lights are dimming when I slow down or push clutch, and if it's idling when the fan kicks on and off. It's getting pretty hot outside and have no clue what to do about AC. Me and my Geo have been through a lot. She definitely has her own personality. I'm about ready to slap her.

Either a bad compressor bearing, or a bad tensioner bearing...
"the belt is still squalling horribly. It stops if I push in clutch or after I drive a couple miles."

Is the belt tight enough? Is the belt too loose? Also, check and make sure all of the pulleys are aligned and the belt trails straight. double check/clean the connections/terminals to the battery and clean your ground wire to the transmission housing and all the grounds under the hood (both inside fenders, radiator support, back of the intake manifold, and the distributor) You have to put the belt on pretty damn tight. Also check to make sure all 3 bolts are there and tight. check for bare spot/s in the wiring coming from the alt/starter to the battery posts and power distribution center near the battery...
"put some stuff in for cracked block"
just my .02...this is a big No No...it's just a quick fix but can create more problems...from what you posted...my best educated guess...you have a bad head gasket and now that "that junk" is in the system your gonna have other problems to deal with soon...
