New Job

Things have gotten tougher with finances over the last few months, since my wife lost her job. I have been getting by ok in my shop for the last few years, but with my wife out of work, I need to make a little more. Anyway, I interviewed for, and was hired, for a journeyman collision tech position at a reputable collision shop in town today. I will still be keeping my regular shop, but will only be working out of there on evenings and weekends. I was working a journeyman collision tech before I opened my shop, so there won't really be anything new about it. It sounds pretty cool, since the shop where I am going to is known to have a lot of really hard hits, which happen to be my favorite. Moneywise, the lighter 25 hour front end hits are better moneymakers, but I also enjoy the really big hits.

I will still be available at my shop to the Metro folks who come to my shop, but I will have to schedule stuff for weekends only now.

It will be difficult to get much done here at my shop while I am 8 to 5 during the week, but I am sure I will still get stuff done. My shop will provide shelter for a half dozen Metros, and will serve as a pretty cool man cave. I will still be running my spindle business out of here, so that should help keep food on the table and justify having a shop like this in tact.

One of the problems that I will have to work on now is tooling for the shop, since my big toolbox and tools will have to go to the collision shop. I have plenty of tools to take to my new job, but it will leave me a little light back here at the shop. I can leave a lot of my "mechanical" tools here, since I will only be doing collision, and I can leave my welders and plasma back here, since the new shop is all set up with nice spot welders and mig welders. I will need to buy a second welding helmet, and I will probably need to pick up another big toolbox, if I want to keep my shop set up right. Fortunately, I have all I need for tools for the new job, and that is what really counts. I can worry about the tooling for my shop later, and pick things up here and there over time, and as the budget allows.

Thanks. As long as it nets more take home, and my own shop remains in tact, my family and I will all be happy. It always sounds easier than it really is, but I will soon know if this is the right move...

Congrats. If your new workplace will involve fixing newer cars, will you need to use structural adhesives and special tools to join thin high strength steels and alloys?

Oh yes, lots of newer cars, and lots of really heavy hits. There are some pretty fancy adhesives out now, lots of HSS steel, lots of aluminum and composite parts. It is fun watching the collision industry evolve.

Nice to hear about the new job. WHere is your shop?
I am in the Sacramento area. My new job and shop are only about 5 miles apart, so I can swing through my shop pretty easy like after work.

The vibe I get is that she is done working, which is why I am making the changes. The new job comes with a nice employer benefit package for the family, and it looks like they have plenty of work to keep me buried, so I am in it for the long haul.

Good luck with the new job EV! I'm glad you're keeping your shop going though. That really would make a wicked man cave. B-) :thumb

Very kewl

Does this mean we will have to labor through endless photo laden, detailed project threads for each hard hit???
