Bought this for $2000 in 1998 with 108,000 miles on it. 19 years later the odometer reads 519,000 miles and tonight it was towed away - donated to a charity. Many improvements over the years - sway bars very early on, bought from someone in NJ off a Swift - 13" wheels, 97(?) knuckles and brakes. Awesome brakes. - 97 R134A AC setup requiring a 95 timing belt/5 bolt crank pulley - mpguino Photo taken yesterday. ![]() |

I'm not sure how donation cars work in California but here In Vancouver BC, the registration is transferable by the wrecking yard prior to dismantling. My 1991 Sprint Turbo was towed into the yard lot.. 24 hours later it was registered to me and in my garage. (Pic n Pull auto sales before they shut down) A month later with a new head gasket it was joyfully climbing mountain passes and passing Golf diesels. I'm glad you like your VW but I could never bring myself to buy a VW after the failed partnership attempt with Suzuki ... which might have hastened their withdrawal from North America.

Sorry to hear it's gone. The wife's car is a 2008 Jetta. Repair bills, when they do occur hit the wallet hard. Cali sucks as far as insurance goes. I left the state back in 1993, and ended up paying every 6 months what I paid per month there. I vow to never live there again. |

Yeah, neighbor girl her ignition lock mechanically failed. Dealership fixed it for over $900 later as they replaced the ECU and immobilizer also. Read up on the internet later that they didn't need to go through what they did. Knock on wood, so far the Jetta just keeps running. No plugs/cap/rotor, just over 700 miles to the tank, gobs of torque - no need to downshift on hills, just push the pedal little more. No downshift issues into 2nd and 1st, quietly and happily cruises at 80 effortlessly and still returns 48-50MPG, my Metro wouldn't do that at 80. LOTS of used parts as they made so many of them, especially in Europe. There's a place that in Europe that will ship you a used long block for under $800.[/quote] Edited by JellyBeanDriver, Dec 20 2017, 12:12 AM.

As far as the ignition switch goes....always call a locksmith first...they will tell you if they can fix it or not....I went through the same thing with Honda...trying to quote me $1100 for a new ignition switch.....I called the locksmith, asked about the immobilizer and he said unplugging it would not require a reprogram or new immobilizer chip, so I removed it and brought it to his shop...$125 out the door.... Also, watch that oil pan on the jetta if you ever have it on dirt...I have seen a tree root take out that aluminum pan once (and a big rock another time)...it really hangs down there. |
