Think you are a good shot?

A Canadian sniper has made a 3871 yard confirmed kill shot.

Weapon was a McMillian Tac50
optics Schmidt and bender 5-25 x 56 PMll
BMG 50, (12.7x99)
Muzzle velocity 2641
Drop when sighted @ 100 yds +/- 20 feet, (240 inches)
windage ???

The bullet was in the air for almost 10 SECONDS. if you calculate flight time at full MV it is 4.4 sec.

Amazing. Just amazing. The previous record was, what, 24xx meters? Also set by Canadians?

That is an amazing shot.

I figured it up on a ballistic calculator for the 50BMG M33 ball round at that velocity and came up with this:

I tried to copy the chart here, but you're gonna have to look at it HERE.

Crap, that didn't work, either. Anyhoo, that's where I put in the info to see the trajectory chart.

A bullet drop of 1,667 feet? That's crazy! I can't imagine trying to dope the wind at that range. :hmm

I think you misunderstood Sphenicie, or miscalculated. He meant 20' of TOTAL drop - for the shot (if the rifle was sighted in for 100yds), and not 20' per 100yds.

...actually, 20' of drop sounds like the figure for 1000 yds and not 100, for .50 BMG

Au contraire, sir. Let's do! Just so long as it's at someone other than US.

I got my measurements from JBM. Here's what it calculated based on my inputs:

The ballistic table:

According to the chart, the bullet drop at 3900 yards is 18440.6 inches. Bullet time of flight is 11.638 seconds. Bullet velocity has dropped to 683.2 fps. The bullet goes sub-sonic after 1500 yards.

18440.6 inches divided by 12 = 1536.7 feet. That's the total bullet drop that I calculated.

I stand corrected. My bad. :x My apologies to Wizard, too.

I'm trying to envision the hold-over required to get 1536.7 ft of elevation. :O
Either he was, quite literally, shooting for the moon, or his target was, more than likely, located down in a canyon somewhere.

Yes. To remain safe, you should stay at least 3 miles from the Canadian border, at all times.
