I assume your talking about stoplights...yes, it maintains just fine...It climbs a bit upon acceleration due to the compressor shutting off upon stepping on the throttlle, but other than that, no problems...the 96+ Metros were designed to work with 134a...
Where as the older R=12 systems struggle with the heavier freon (134a) and do not like sitting still because there is not enough air or refrigerant flow through the smaller channeled condensor core creating higher heat levels which makes the compressor work hard to push the 134a freon through.
I usually fill the older systems with evirosafe : http://www.es-refrigerants.com/products/w/id/645/t/industrial-r134a-replacement-refrigerant-6-ounce-can-equivalent-16-oz-134a/details.asp because it's lighter than 134a and lighter than r12...so it requires less freon and cools better than r12...
or if possible, swap out with a new condenser core, evap core, equalizer valve, and receiver drier because the new cores that are being sold are designed for 134a. The biggest problem with the heavier freon is the rising heat levels and high pressures in the cores, so you also have to make sure the a/c cooling fan is also operating (spinning) correctly...

I found it to be rather lame if the car was not moving, but just fine if it is. If you get caught in an extended traffic jam it will fall behind.
