1997 Geo Metro 3Cyl manual. Problem Description: While driving I push the little square button to turn the A/C on, it lights up AOK and I then turn the Blower Fan of high....works fine for about 5 minutes but then: 1. A/C light (on button) goes off. 2. Simultaneously the Blower Fan goes off 3. Result is no A/C and No fan. Here's the kicker.....after about 15 minutes the Blower Fan starts to work again EXCEPT for the highest setting. But the A/C light on the A/C button stays off. after an additional 10 minutes or so of driving the A/C will work again (but only for 5 minutes). and then after an additional 10 minutes if I keep everything off....The highest setting on the Blower Fan will miraculously start to work again. Then this whole story will repeat itself over and over again....I can't seem to get more than 5 minutes of A/C Is this the result of a circuit breaker cooling off and re-setting itself? Or possibly a series of self re-setting circuit breakers? (I tend to doubt this as it's a simple car). Could it be one of those "Modules" in the plastic case next to the battery that's just starting to go bad and/or overheating and then cooling off and working again? This is a big mystery to me and I would really appreciate a diagnosis and or suggestion. Thanking everyone in advance for their help, insight, experience and advice. Check that your fan switch isn't falling apart. Might need to be zip tied together to keep making the correct contact. |

OK, But what about the A/C cutting out? |

if there is no power through the circuit then you will not get a signal to the a/c amplifier and thus no compressor engagement.....

I have had the issue with the first two fan speeds since owning the car. Not it is only on high and you have to wiggle the switch to get the ac to engage. Will just a zip tie work to tighten that switch box? I found the blower switch on Rockauto for 63 bucks. How hard is it to change this switch out? If I remember looking at it when I was installing my stereo, the cables are fairly tight, should be three cables if the picture is correct. I would hate to get it apart and not be able to get my hands in the hole to reconnect the lines. |

The wiggling now I'd say is due to the switch body coming apart - zip tie fix that. The first two speeds not working for years - I think that's the blower resistor. |

Do the zip tie first since it is easier to get to and can fix the other two speeds. When the housing separates the edge holds it down better than the middle. The edge is where the switch is for high, the two lower speeds are in the middle. High is the last to go when the switch comes apart. |

Yep. Fixed it last night thru the glove box. As soon as I took out the glove box and looked in, I saw the rear of the switch sitting high. Put a clamp on it first to test the switch, got the three top speeds working. Threaded a zip tie thru the back and added two layers of corrugated plastic on the top side, zipped it tight and now all 4 speeds work like a champ. 5 cent fix and took all of 15 minutes. I can only imagine what a repair shop would have charged and they would have probably put zip ties on it and never said a word. Thanks for all the posts and photos. Easiest repair I have had to do on my little go cart. |

OK I'll give it a whirl for the blower fan. My switch is loose and when jiggle it it goes on. BUT WHAT ABOUT THE A/C CUTTING OUT??? |

Post 5 says if the fan cuts out it switches off the compressor. Fix the fan first and then return here if the AC is still shutting down. |

So I "zip tied" the fan switch...seems to work but in the process I LOST that dang little ball bearing so now the fan switch just slides from off through high without clicking. I'll test the A/C tomorrow...what a PITA...and of course it's NOT the size of a BB gun BB or a common ball bearing from my parts drawer from my bicycle bearings. |

The AC should be fine now that the switch is tight. Mine was cutting out due to the switch losing contact. As far as the bearing, the only way to get a replacement is at a junk yard or a new switch plate. I'm not sure it can be installed without pulling the switch plate out of the dash. Run a small magnet around under that spot in the dash, you may get lucky and pick it up that way. I did mine thru the glove box, so I never moved anything but tightened up the switch. |
