AC noise; screeching sound when AC is turned on

It got up to well above 100 degrees here yesterday, and when I pushed the AC button on my '94 Geo a loud screeching resulted. I turned off the AC, and we sweltered for the rest of the trip. When I got home and cooled off, I started the Geo and turned the AC on. Same screech but maybe not as loud. I revved the motor up and the screech stopped when the engine returned to idle. Each time I revved the engine higher the screech stopped when the engine returned to a lower rpm. All this time the AC was putting out plenty of cool air. My question is: what is going on and is there anyway to get the AC to work until our weather cools off enough for me to work on it? If I'm really screwing something up that is fixable if I don't use the AC, tell me. I'll wear a sweatband when driving until our weather drops down to the 70's. Any and all comments are appreciated. Thanks.

Your AC belt is loose.

Jeff, thank you so much. It's still hard for me to even imagine a loose belt making a metal to metal screeching sound, but that is what it was. You've made my day, my week, and maybe my month. Boy, .031 to .039 is a tighter belt than I'm used to. Thanks again.

My '97 LSi has this same issue. It will squeal when I turn on the A.C. and sometimes after it shifts at high rpms.
(It's an automatic)
Would I need to just look for a tighter belt or is there a way to tighten it? I don't remember that belt having a tensioner or anything. Thanks!! :rocker
