A'C and alternator belts same size?I

I have a 96 1.3 auto with A/C-my a/c belt has been off for a few years since I've had problems with the crank gear and crank seal and put it back together without the belt-when I put a used tranny in a few years ago I was pretty sure the alternator belt and the a/c belt were the same size (lengthwise, how big the inner circle is) when I installed it I remember I had to use a floor jack on the tensioner to raise it high enough to get the belt tight enough not to be sloppy-now when I try to install it it is way too loose with the tensioner raised as high as it will go-I looped the belt around the compresser and have the smooth side of the belt on top of the tensioner and around the crank pulley-if I try and put the ribbed area on the bottom of the tensioner it is even looser-thinking the a/c belt may be smaller I ordered one from NAPA since it had a different part number than the alternator belt-however it was the same size as the belt I had and everything is loosy loosy with the tensioner raised ashigh as it will go-don't really need a/c but it would be nice if it worked-

does your 96 have power steering? There are 3 different belts for these.... Alt and w/p, A/c without ps and A/c with ps.

The tensioners are smooth and they push up on the belt between the crank pulley and the AC pulley to tighten up. PTCap: your pulley does have 2 belt drives on it right? the one on the inside toward the engine is for the wp and alt. the outer one is ac.

update I researched all the A/C belts on the NAPA site paying particular attention to the specifications which list the size of the belt-I found one that fits which is about 31.66 in (810mm) in diameter as opposed to the first belt I purchased which was about 32.66 in (830mm) in diameter-both were listed as fitting a 96 1.3 without power steering-I will be able to use the first belt as a spare for my alternator/water pump as it is the proper size-
