Hello fellow Geo Owners. I need assistance. I have a Geo metro that now will not start. It has started with no problem for two weeks, then last week would not start for a day, then a few days it would not start. then I had a no crank issue and a no start issue. Now I have a no start , again.

Fuel pump activates on key turn. battery is checked at AutoZone as OK. It has new spark plugs, spark plug wires, new distributor cap, new water pump. Could I maybe have an ERG, Cam shaft sensor or fuel injection problem? I also cannot find the OBD sensor clip in the interior of the vehicle under the drivers side? any way to check the " check engine light " manually on a 97? to maybe easier diagnose problem?

Also checked fuses: main, and fuel pump. no start. now it revs like it wants to start but dosent stay on unless I give it gas. I also have a constant gas smell around the car, so Now I do not know if maybe the catallitic converter is also an issue? checked the gas, not coming from the gas tank or out of the exhaust.

The OBD2 connector is under the dash at the base of the Grey plastic trim panel, just follow your steering column down..

Do you have a CEL (check engine light) on?

Yes. it is on is the sensor under the steering wheel or to the right by the hood release?

Also it seems to Idle at a high rate. Car can go 10 mph without stepping on the gas pedal? Should it even be that high?

the obd connector is directly under the steering wheel shaft... no way to get codes without a reader.. autoparts will lend you one for deposit.... I suspect the fuel injector. they have several shady modes of failure and this really seems like one of them.
turn on key, check that no fuel is dripping into the throttle body under the air cleaner. crank engine (assistant) while looking into throttle bore with previously lit up flashlight. should see a cone of fuel mist... if it is spotty or not at all, then replace fuel injector..
if not start then pour a tablespoon of gasoline into the throttle body then start... if it runs for 5 seconds then quits... fuel injector... just to be sure... you can disconnect the fuel return line and route it into a container... Then try to start her up... fuel should flow. if it does.... fuel injector... If not... fuel filter.

Great thanks for the advice. Do I have to remove the top of the fuel injector in order to see the throttle bore? and If it is the fuel filter, Is that going to be located in the gas tank?

Ok the fuel filter was replaced in the car already so, narrows down to fuel injector. Great find and hopefully will be the culprit. I'll update when I get the part.

Test, don't buy random parts and cross your fingers that you didn't waste money.

If the check engine light is on, have the codes checked at a auto parts store. record what the codes are not descriptions. Post what they are here.

Was able to take it to ORileys, They did a battery scan and it came back "Bad Voltage Regulator" possibly need a new alternator. The ODB Scanner was not working on car, probably the fuse is out.

You will need to check the dome fuse to see if it is blown and keeping the obdii scanner from working.

ECUs can and do fail, but it is a rare occurrence on our cars.
