There is a major silver lining to this gray cloud. If the EGR is not opening, then this is probably why you're failing for NOX. It would be more difficult to find a high NOX problem that's not EGR related, with the exception of very advanced timing, or a vacuum leak. This is good. Look at it as, when I fix the EGR issue, I'll probably pass, get better mileage, and my engine will run cooler. I've known some Metro owners who had to switch to premium, just because the EGR wasn't working. So when it was fixed, and the pinging stopped, they saved money at the pump as well.

I just mainly focused on the 2 big holes on the EGR. never even thought of the little nipple. How would I go about cleaning the nipple?
can I clean the transducer? and how?
I used a small drill bit and went up in size until it was the the original inner diameter.

Transducer modulates how much the egr valve is opened by sensing the pressure from that nipple. It cannot be cleaned, and does need to be plumbed in the correct direction (see sticker under the hood)

I am not super familiar with the 92, but later stuff has solenoids that control the vacuum passages. If yours has the same controls, you also have electronics to think about.

As far as how does he know it's not working....is it not throwing a code?

Are you actually failing because of the EGR malfunction, or just for the NOX?

Ok, lots of thanks to all .. great site!
I did what ev said and the EGR valve is all good. so maybe i put a vacuum hose on backwards or wrong?

The smog man told me to rev the motor up and then he told me the EGR valve is not working.

I have had a number of my geos with check engine lights on for bad cat and/or egr type worries.

I run a engine monitor that tells me if a have a cat code or egr code exceeding value.

My remedy for passing government smog test is, tune up, plugs air clean oil change etc. but then I do a seafoam clean both through the throttle body and in the tank.

I also run highest octane I can and I had 4 bottles of Heet to up the Oxyen in the fuel.

If I still am getting a code issue that points to the cat I will do the lacquer thinner in the tank... do a youtube search for Scotty Killmer and cat fix. Love that guy.

I have always passed after these clean up activities. Just me.

Was it high before your egr work? maybe there is a vac leak around the egr gasket.

High octane is going to make your emissions worse.

I have no idea how that would work. This statement sounds like a very old wive's tale. If you'd care to elaborate, I'm all ears.

I have also heard not to use high octane gas for smog.

I use 87 regular and flex fuel. 50 - 50 mix
