Loss of power!; 1988 chevy sprint metro loss of power

Was driving my 1988 chevy metro sprint (non-turbo) and out of no where it seemed to lose most of its horse power, the car was running great until that moment. And now it has trouble getting to 35 mph. Seems to have lost all capability of accelerating, sounds like the carb is a lot louder and maybe an exhaust leak? I don't know how all these problems could come at once. The car before this problem ran quiet and had plenty of power at acceleration. After this I changed plugs, and wires, didn't seem to do anything. Ordered cap and rotor but I don't expect much luck I'm not used to these smaller motors I don't even know where to start. Please help!? :banghead

Compression check is a good place to start. Follow the proper procedure.
If it still has a cat you might disconnect the exhaust before the cat to see if it is clogged up. If that is the issue the power will be normal when you drive it with an exhaust leak.
You might also check the timing and make sure the crank sprocket isn't loose. It could have jumped time or if the crank bolt came loose and the key that holds the crank sprocket in place is damaged it can play hell with the timing.
