Well I got the email a few minutes ago that the replacement cheapo tester is on its way so I'm definitely gonna do the test again to check behind the first one that broke. I think the readings I got may have been a little lower than they actually are too since I could feel some air coming out of the valve while doing the test meaning it didn't go into driving up the needle. With my luck lately with tools breaking on me in my hands as I'm trying to use them(comp tester, weed whacker the other day etc) I'm a little nervous to do the loan a tool thing cuz my luck the damn thing would break on me and I'd be stuck with the whole bill. Will definitely look around and get a better quality tester tho. I have 2 other metros to mess around with and am becoming more and more car truck atv anything with an engine crazy so it will be worth it to have a nicer one I think. Many "deals" in my area on stuff and I've been burned recently (damn pt cruiserss) so now after learning a little more about cars I'm thinkin no more buying stuff without a compression test first. Wonder if used car dealers will let people test before they buy.. |

It is good to include a vacuum test in conjunction with compression test. Look at what the needle does as well as the reading. Any manual, FSM, Haynes, or Chiltons, have a page describing causes for the different fluctuations. |

Don't worry about the loaner tool breaking. It seems they don't care. I used a puller once and it just wouldn't pull so I ended up cranking it down so hard until the puller snapped in half. They took it back without concerns. The one issue with loaner tools is that they are sometimes pretty used and abused by the time you get them. This isn't as much of a concern for a puller where it is either good or broken but is a concern with a compression tester. That is why you might check out a couple different ones at least. The cheapo tool you got replaced may be no better than the last one. I am not saying the loaner tools are great but they are better than this. Remember that you get what you pay for. Conor |

I have the crappy actron compression gauge at the house (same one autozone loans out I believe), it has lasted me about 5 years now, only basically gets used on the geos a couple of times a year, if you don't abuse it the cheapos are ok, just double check it every now and then. Of course, don't buy the cheapest Chinese made one from the 6th page of ebay products. Brands like proto, otc and lisle all make quality tools. Hell, a lot of the matco and mac stuff that you see is actually just rebranded stuff from these very brands. |

Sphenicle-Good point on the vacuum test, didn't think of that. Will definitely pick one of those up at some point in my travels, looks like they can be had fairly reasonable. This weekend has me finally picking up my 2 other Metros now that I've gotten ahold of a car trailer that I can rent cheap(uhual=$60) so I'll make a new thread with some pics to show you guys. One is a 91 very other is 94 base hatch. Very doesn't run at the moment but I think it's gonna be my favorite in the end. Got my work cut out for me restoring these 3 so y'all won't be rid of me any time soon lol. Anyone know if the FSM for the 91 vert will also cover most stuff for my 90 & 94 hatchbacks? Most of the manuals on eBay are for the convertibles. I understand there are actually 3 manuals to make the complete set but are the "supplemental" and "electrical diagnoses" ones really all that necessary? And I noticed that ALL of the supplemental ones all say "covering the covertible version" or something at the bottom of the cover page? Would be nice if I can just buy one set(if all 3 are really needed) and call it good enough. But if the info is drastically different then I suppose I would have to break down and buy all 9. Thanks guys |

The 90 FSM is a 3 piece set. The 90 service manual, Electrical diagnosis and supplement for the convertible. There are differences in wiring between the base and verts. Not a lot but small differences. The 91 FSM is a 2 piece set. The 91 service manual and the supplement. The supplement has the diagnostic procedures in it. If it was me I would get the 90 complete set to cover your vert and it would work for your 90 base. As far as the 94, there is a copy of the 94 FSM here on the forum. The 94 has differences since it was the year the upgraded emissions started. I you want a pdf version of the 94 pm me and I can get you one. Edited by freegeo, Sep 22 2017, 11:04 AM.

Ordered the FSM set, thanks for the heads up freegeo! Have a feeling I'll have quite a bit of coin involved getting the 3 of them back on the road(legally at least) but when gas gets back to $4/gallon it'll be worth it. Not to mention when I do occasionally see one for sale that's in good/great shape they are always $1500-$3000 so I figure I could get most or all of my money back one day if I needed to...wife tells me I should just go down to the used dealer and pick up a ready to go Honda or Toyota or something but....nah I like being different

Think I fixed my tester..the quick connect coupler piece that threads on right below the release valve was a little loose. Bet thats where my mystery air was escaping not the release button seal/valve...we'll see if the needle will stay put next time and if it does and I cant feel any leaks anymore I'll assume shes fixed. If the 94 I bring home Monday tests out ok I'll be ordering a frame brace and having some welding done and have her on the road soon. Then once I'm saving on gas it'll be full steam ahead on the 90XFI and 91Vert projects. Hey do the verts have an actual trunk? Havnt been able to come across that bi of info in my travels... |

I was thinking the same thing... how could you not know? I always look in the trunk before buying a car. |
I would say due to the fact he bought them but hasn't picked them up yet.
Correct. Located the one and only manual transmission vert within hours of here and it was buried in a guys backyard behind rows of other old compact cars so we agreed I would come back later with a car trailer to pick it up after he got her dug out. Saw some other neat compacts including a 1979 Honda Civic I think he said..cool. Anyways tomorrow is the day to bring her home
