Trying To Figure Out This Little Car....

Hey, Folks. I grabbed 4 quarts of oil, but one of them was 5w20 instead of 5w30. I didn't notice this until I had poured in half of the quart of 5w20 during an oil change. Will half a quart of 5w20 mixed with 3 quarts 5w30 make any difference. I doubt it will, but wanted to get another opinion. Thanks. Sorry, it wouldn't let me edit the title to "1/2 quart 5w20 and 3 quarts 5w30". Edited by pyratenomad, Sep 23 2017, 11:07 AM.

Short answer; No. You need 3.5 qt. anyway. You just measured the 1/2 up front. IIRC, we have 1 member who uses 10w30 regularly, most use 5w30 (me included) some use 0w20(30) Contrary to popular belief you can ix oils. Synthetic/ conventional/ 0w/ 5w/ 10w/ 15w/ + 20/30/40/50 The multi weight oil designations started in the 50's(?60's?) before that you needed to change oil based on the conditions you thought you would encounter before your next oil change. The numbers began as; 10winter/30summer designations to indicate how the oil viscosity would act as temps changed. over the years the winter/summer were removed so now we just use the moniker 5w30. |

Thanks for the info. There was a typo as I did add 3.5 quarts. Trying to type and fending off a dog who insists on trying to play tug-of-war with me. ![]() Again, thanks for taking the time to relay all that info. It's good to know. |

I mix oils in crank case regularly depending on what I have at the house, especially in my 94 w 270k, in my 98 with a rebuilt engine, I stick to 5w20 synthetic blend. I have heard techs claim that your engine will start to leak like crazy if you switch back and forth between synthetic and conventional. |
