Time to get serious about that top-end rebuild. Water pump failed on me yesterday on the way home from a funeral 30+ miles away. It had been seeping/dripping a bit last week - and I (mistakenly) thought I had some time before it would completely fail... but the squealing wet belts and nasty seepage from the TOP of the timing cover cover tell me it's time to park it til I get all my top-end parts accumulated - and will likely rent a tow dolly (or put the Metro on one of my bee hive trailers) - and haul it down to Hutto for a Geo rebuild.

I assume you have some other issues that you feel the rebuild is warranted? The water pump job really isn't all that invasive on its own....and you can attack the front seals and timing belt while you're in there. If you are going to do anything with the head, I would definitely evaluate the condition of the rings BEFORE you pull the head for top end work. |

I've run compression numbers (both dry and wet), and it's a little low (~150 psi on all 3 cylinders dry, and ~175-180 wet) - so am looking for a bit better mileage than I have been getting... And seeing as I'm the 2nd owner of this car - the first owner (who is a friend of mine) only addressed maintenance as things would become a problem, instead of on a mileage schedule for maintenance. Will be changing out intake & exhaust valves, gaskets & seals, rings, etc, etc, etc... Plus - I'll be learning while doing it alongside Geo. I can do only so much with my existing knowledge - but I'm willing to learn alongside him since he knows these cars inside and out. I really think after doing this - I'll have the self confidence to dive in next time to do it myself. Plus - I want to know that the repairs are being done correctly, and that I'll have a reliable car once I drive away. It makes me concerned (and damned lucky) that I just took 2 extended trips (Dallas>San Antonio>Dallas, then Dallas>Nashville>Dallas ) - and had no problems... then on simple home-area driving 2-3 times a week - the water pump goes to crap... I just want a reliable car - and the rebuild I feel will be worth the time, money, and experience gained. Edited by HarmonyHollow, Sep 24 2017, 08:06 PM.

Your lucky it was close to home and not on some long trip. That can get even more expensive. |

Yeah , your wet test would indicate you need rings as well. Good luck on your rebuild! |
