Trying To Figure Out This Little Car....
[ * * ]
So, I have been looking around for various parts for an eventual rebuild. Of course, I checked out eBay and found some for sale. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with these kits. I want to know what I am getting into if I am gonna drop $300 on eBay.

Here is an example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/96-98-Geo-Metro-1-0L-SOHC-Master-Engine-Rebuild-Kit-G10-/250529197721

If the eBay kits are a no-go, can someone suggest a reputable source for quality parts?

dont know about quality (brand is engine tech) but Rock auto has a rebuild kit for $160-- you get to pick the size on your rod and main bearings and your pistons and rings-- full gasket set, oil pump, timing belt are included--- might want head bolts and water pump to add on for about $250 total cost shipped

What type of rebuild are you going to do? If machining will be involved then you want to wait to know what needs replaced. Best to measure and replace the parts that are wore out.

No rebuilds in the near future, but looking for a source of good parts when the time comes. I figure that I should probably steer clear of most ebay items and wanted to get a second opinion or two.

Looking for parts a head of time is not a bad idea. Getting all the gaskets and seals you would need would be a good start. Rock auto has parts at a reduced price sometimes.

I would not buy pistons, rings or bearings until is was apart and knew if it needed replaced or not.

I would get a Felpro or Beck Arnley head gasket (with the large drainback holes), and felpro intake and exhaust gaskets at least.

When you see the felpro stuff next to the paper ebay gaskets there is no comparison in quality, the Felpro stuff is great.

As far as all your less labor intensive stuff...egr, water outlet, cam and crank seals....you might be able to get the kit cheaper than piecing them together on Rockauto....how soon do you want to be back in there doing them again?

I don't plan on doing a rebuild anytime soon. I just want to make sure I have the parts at hand in case the need arises.

I am a bit of a prepper and this just gives me some peace of mind. Knowing where and what to buy makes my life a bit easier. Not having to buy the same parts twice may keep my wallet a bit fatter. :)

I appreciate all of the info, folks.

Performance part is a top rated seller... over 30k sales with 100% feedback rating. Pretty sure they would be a good source for your master rebuild though a little pricey for ebay.

Thanks for the info. I searched for performance parts and came up with many ebay stores by that name. Do you have a link? If not, I am sure that I will stumble upon it sooner or later. :)

If you pay attention to where things are shipping from on Rockauto, and try to pair as many items as you can to the same warehouse, you can get the good stuff pretty cheap.
