for 1994 what is the difference between the 1.0l standard motor and the xfi motor??? I know the xfi got better milage, and had about 5 HP less--- what was the difference??? cam? timing? bore or stroke?

what about the 5 speed gear box--- were they the same rations on the xfi vs. the standard??

so quick search helped a little, xfi had a different cam, and gear box ratio , also had 2 ring pistons vs. 3 ring in the std motor, some say the xfi has a different computer box too

anything I missed?

Yes the computer was different too. Some small differences between base and xfi. Cam, ecm and trans were the biggest things.

and no passenger outside mirror

mainly wondering the mechanical differences ---local guy selling a base rust bucket with an xfi motor swap--- not sure if there is a concrete way to figure out if it really is an XFI motor without checking the piston ring grooves and cam lobe height --- I heard people unknowingly change the head on an xfi motor with an rebuilt head off ebay and just toss the cam/head or return it as a core
just wondering what gave the xfi better fuel economy

Good info here:

Mostly the right wiring harness, computer, cam, 5spd.

Biggest difference was due to the gear ratio. Cam brought the torque output lower in the RPM range making it easier to deal with the gear ratio.

I heard that just a cam swap (or re-grind) will net 8-12 mpg , that' s a pretty significant increase just from the cam

Nope, that is not a realistic number. Cam only, may get you 2-3 mpg.
