One of my 3 cylinder engines has languished for almost 3 years thanks to bigger fish to fry. This past couple of weekends, I finally got everything cleaned up and mostly re-assembled. However, the zip-lock bag of oil pan bolts (and a couple of other things like the original clutch) has vanished into an alternate universe. Of course this was discovered about an hour after any place one could purchase metric bolts from and actually get to within reasonable driving distance had closed for the weekend. My problem is, I cannot determine with certainty whether these bolts are 12mm or 16mm long, although I measured the threads tapped in the block as M6-1.0 diameter and pitch. Also I am not certain if the bolt heads are flanged or had washers on them. After a couple of hours googling around I never found a straight and clear answer that the search bots can find which spell out the length in clear unambiguous terms. So I figure I'll ask the question here and get some kind of searchable answer to benefit the next generation confronted with a half finished Metro / Swift engine and missing bolts. I can get a hundred flanged head M6-1.0 x 16mm long bolts for about $22 and have them here Thursday if I pull the trigger on the order within the next 32 minutes. I figure worst case I have a grinder and hacksaw to convert a few to a shorter length, and one way or another have the oil pan on this coming weekend. Meanwhile, I'm steadily putting everything else together and using a couple of bolts robbed from the fenders to just loosely hold the oil pan on. I hope to have the water pump changed out and a bunch more stuff done during the evenings this week so maybe it can go back in the car on Saturday the 21st or Sunday the 22nd. But the schedule has slipped so many times that I'll be happy to drive it by Ground Hog's Day. |

The oil pan bolts are 16 mm long but the last 4mm doesn't have threads. Edited by freegeo, Oct 16 2017, 12:24 PM.

Thanks. And with lock washers. I got some 6x12mm and 6x16mm bolts fairly cheap, since no one apparently stocks those with the missing threads (alignment tip) that could be found quickly. I've got a grinder and it shouldn't be that hard to jig something up to grind off the tip 4mm of threads if the un-ground ones refuse to start easily or bottom out. The arrival of replacement bolts might precipitate the missing ones back into this space-time continuum from whatever alternate universe they are hiding in. Or they might not surface until some day in the future after I'm gone, and they're collating everything for an estate sale that they don't just mindlessly fling into a dumpster as "more of his useless junk". |
