Hi everyone, my name is Austin and i own a 91 Geo metro lsi ive had it for over two years now i got it with a torn up top and it looked pretty bad well ive been fixing it up other the two years and at first it had a high idle in park and was about at 2000rpm hot and cold but goes to 1000rpm when im in drive or reserve sitting there. it runs and drives great besides when its warming up its like it bogs down to 500rpm and gets really rough. ive been looking for my solution to the high idle for a very long time now and ive read the forums and looked up videos but nothing really seems to help. i do not have a manual for it which i know is the first thing i should have done. i am mainly posting this because i just had the transmission rebuilt in it because it went out because the previous owners didn't care about it so since i got it rebuilt which was two days ago the idle in park has now gone up to 2500rpm in park and neutral rather than the 2000 rpm. i am also concerned because in park it revs up high and almost gets to 3000 and then drops down to 1500 and goes right back up Edited by unusedsalt, Nov 3 2017, 12:15 AM.

First, welcome to GMF! A warm idle at 2500 in Park or Neutral is definitely too high. It must make quite a jolt when you put it in Drive or Reverse. And more recently it is bouncing up and down between 1500 and 3000 rpm even after warm up. You should definitely get a manual for it, as there are a number of potential causes to look into, and the FSM will help you diagnose it systematically. Some simple things you can look into first include checking for loose or leaking vacuum hoses, as a vacuum leak can easily raise idle speed and confuse and fight against the other engine idle controls.(Use your under hood decal as a guide to hose routing). Also, check your radiator for low coolant. Air pockets in the cooling system or low coolant may cause the cold idle air system to admit excess air, which can also elevate idle speed. It is also possible that the throttle valve and/or TPS has been incorrectly adjusted, but those can be reviewed later.. |
