i found out today that a guy that i work with has an investigative hearing for a post he made on facebook. when it came out that the city claims to be able to read any employee's public media posts and render disciplinary action at their will i was astounded.

they claim that anything is fair game, facebook, twitter, snapchat, linked in, it's all considered to be within their purview.

although i am not a big facebook user, i'm deleting my account. so if you wonder where i went, i hope to evaporate into facebook oblivion.

sayonara......

Good riddance, I say. I never had any use for Facebook. I always thought of it as a kind of digital playground for idiots.

I'll check facebook for messages, which are few. But since highschool I post so little. And then around this July facebook started pushing "Notifications loaded right to your desktop" EVERY SINGLE TIME I logged in on the computer. The whole sure, maybe later options, with no option of Not interested was so annoying that I now only check it on my phone.

Since the invention of the telegraphic any transmission can, and will, be monitored. ^o)
There is no privacy because we give it up voluntarily, on a daily basis, with every log in, download, phone call, or online purchase. :type
It's all in the terms and conditions. :deal
This voluntary disclosure just makes life easier for the good guys, bad guys, and marketing. :news
If one of my employees posts something detrimental to the company, I'd investigate too. :thumb
Don't be afraid of facebook, geo forum, texting, tweeting, etc. :shake Your information is already out there. And has been for a long time. B-)
In God we trust, all others we monitor. ;)
If you have something to hide, stay off the internet and stop carrying your phone. :cheers

I know somebody that was fired over a pretty innocent facebook post. Some people put some ridiculous things on facebook though and I wouldn't want to hire those people either.

Employers absolutely look at everything they can though. Unless you are 100% sure it is ok, don't post anything about your employer. It was stressed very hard to me in business school. It really isn't a hard concept. Their disciplinary action can be a direct result of random peoples' reactions. I don't put my place of business on my facebook. Someone may disagree with any small thing you post, go to your facebook, see where you work and cause all kinds of problems.

Just have to be very cautious.

Good for you, congratulations. I am not a fan of face book at all, it has been a cancer that i have mostly been able to swat away but those around me seem to be glued to it and every moment amd i mean every SINGLE moment it needs to be checked. Good for you man glad you are dumping it.

I've never been on any social media platform, for the reasons already given. The 1st amendment probably does cover these issues, but you'd have to hire an attorney, and spend a ton, just to get some kind of justice. There was a kid, under 18 I think, who was thrown in the slammer for a facebook post. He never threatened any specific person, but they decided that the content warranted it.

I read an article recently about the co-creator of facebook (Zuck's college friend) , and he said it was basically created for data mining. Really just a way for companies to see what people are interested in so they can more directly advertise to individuals. If you type about river rafting a lot for a few days, you will start to see ads for life jackets and paddles...

Plus it just becomes so thought consuming if youre doing it all the time. I cancelled mine a couple years ago and life kind of returned to normal.

i hit the delete button and within 14 days my facebook presence will be gone for good.

more on my co-worker's offense. he posted a copied meme that showed a group of chimps wearing tool belts and holding hammers, etc. the written post below the stock internet image said, "we are working this saturday."

he was a good employee with 7 years of service having had no previous disciplinary actions - terminated. :whistle

Wow I'd a thought it'd be worse than that... Without knowing the manager or employee if they was so ashamed of working saturday, or so thin skinned that sealed the decision fire someone good they'd known more than a week let alone 7 years...

Where I work noone would be left if management had that short a fuse, me included.

Pretty sure if your profile is friends only that can't happen. Remember reading on yahoo news that someone spread isis propaganda on facebook, but wasn't charged since the posts weren't marked public.
