looking to swap out a rearend on a truck I'm selling. it has pinion bearing noise when off the throttle. Is there anyway you can find out if a junkyard rearend doesn't have a bad pinion bearing? only thing I think you can check out is if thhere is any metal in the diff and slop in the yoke.... |

I'm going to say no on this one. Unless you want to take it apart in the yard. But at that point, you could take the one you have apart and put a bearing in it. Edit: Have you checked to see if your pinion nut is just loose? That would make it whine on decel. Edited by Turbo Dan-O, Dec 3 2017, 02:52 PM.

yes I did. It was tight. So I rarely drive this truck. Idk why I thought the pinion bearing is toast. the rearend makes a noise, but it's actually during throttle. There seems to be about a few miles per when I'm not on the throttle and it makes a noise. It really isn't bad at all. I decided to drain fluid and run some fancy lucas oil. I'm going to see if that works. If you have the window open or any type of music on, you can't hear it. So I guess the best way to fix is to have a loud stereo. |

Run 85w140 gear oil with a bottle of STP mixed in. That will quiet it down. Usually a whine in the rear is wrong gear backlash. Pinion bearing noise is more of a grinding, normally. |

I would check/replace the rear drive shaft U-joints before taking the rear end apart.... For me it's always the U-joints. The d.s. Center bearing is also a candidate if you have one. Barring that - I would just look at the pinion front seal on the JY axle. If it looks good and the oil inside looks good - chances are the bearing is not shot. 03 silverado 1500 work truck. The lucas oil did quiet it down some. It's one of those things that most people probably won't notice. How would a Ujoint cause a noise like that? Never heard of that? (Would be a cheap fix). |

if the u-joint was dry, but not sloppy (clunking) it would make noise. steady bearing (if it has one) could be bad as well, seen some just spinning inside the rubber mount, others only squeaky on turns. |

I don't think this truck has a carrier bearing. I'll double check though. If anything, I need to lift it up, put it in gear and see where it's coming from. |

So you should have an 8.6 10 bolt in that, know if it's a posi? You can get odd noises on decel if the wrong oil is in there. Found a pretty good list of noise descriptions with possible related problems you could check out and see if anything matches what you are noticing. http://www.ebay.com/gds/Diagnosing-Differential-and-Driveline-Noises-/10000000009118033/g.html Is it bad that I have heard at least 14 of those noises in the past? lol Anyway, can't vouch for all of them, but the ones I recognize are pretty spot on for what I found in the housing when I tore it down. |

The GM trucks used that crappy weak gov lock locker, its not a limited slip like the older Auburn or Eaton. Its a poor and weak design and they dont last under any abuse. The locker wont make any noise until it explodes and grenades the internals. If its a higher pitched whine, the ring gear and pinion gear are not set right or worn. |
