Low ambient temperatures in my area; Runablitlity cool air

Well it hit 15 deg F in my area in the last few mornings. Took a long time to warm up even at highway speeds.

I have an MPgino and it shows digitally that it runs right at 195.8 once warmed up. One the down hill runs on my 40 min commute it was cooling down in the 180s or lower, then the heat would cool off.

Did the cardboard in front of the radiator trick, ran to 195.8 and stayed right there even in the down hill stretches, left about 20% on the vertical side open to cool air.

Intake air temp never got above 35F.

MPG down significantly with the cool air.

B-)

Back in the 80s I drove a B210 commuting from Sisters to Bend. I had to close off the cold air intake and lift the thermo switch and run hot air intake. The heater could cool the engine to the point where the choke would start to close. I had to run it in fourth gear to keep heat in the cabin when it was below zero.

Can you post a picture of your MPgino?

Whenever I'm heading off for work in the mornings, my car's little digital display will be showing 95.7 - for the Ride; which is way COOL, btw. But, as I begin to descend off the mountain, getting into some low-lying valleys, I have to go up to 99.7.

I can't say that I've ever tried this "cardboard trick in front of the radio", of yours. How does that work? Usually, I just roll down my window and try and fiddle with my aerial. Doesn't always work, though.

:rofl Yeah, saw the Radio instead of radiator.... how'd that get in there! :)

Yeah at 15F this morning at about 75 MPH the temp in the radiator started to climb but not over 200F before I slow to about 60 and it dropped back to my usual 195.8

If I remember correctly from the summer months by cooling fan turns on at about 204F.

Oh yeah, also I have a MPGino on my 94XFI, but on my 98 I am running an Ultragauge right out of the OBD port. My 98 is my daily 3/5 driver these days.

I will try and take a picture and post.

No picture required. When you stated 195.8 I knew you had a ultragauge and not a mpguino.

Yeah, get those two mixed up sometimes. I really do like having the extra info from the engine from these adders.

I put cardboard in front of my daughters radiator to help it be warmer. She brought it back to me with a severe vibration. Her car had a plastic fan. It had melted and slung plastic every where. I guess I should have blocked the grill instead of putting the cardboard against the radiator.... Oh well, live and learn.
