Have an '01 PT Cruiser 4 spd automatic with 76K miles and notice the tranny is whining a little just before it shift when under a little heavier throttle. Thinking it's the pump. Definitely not the power steering pump. I changed the filter and fluid (atf4+) 15K ago, smells and looks fine, going to again this weekend. Anyone experience the same with this transmission? (it's used in the caravan and I think neon too). Is this a sign it's going out or will it run with this whine for a long time (like 10's of thousands of miles?) |

The fluid in those must be full synthetic or the tranny dies. If it started since changing the fluid, it could have some air in it. That tranny is notorious for needing the input and output speed sensors. If there is any tranny fluid at the electronic switching valve body that has the wires plugged into it. It needs changed as it is leaking internally. Unplug and if the electrical contacts are wet with red fluid, the metal box it plugs into needs replaced. There is an upgrade by Borg/warner that Can be purchased at rockauto not too expensively. Also they say it might help to add a ground wire to the tranny as it has a separate controller. The 2001 PT cruiser in my shop right now has a blown head gasket. That vehicle has a two speed fan motor for the radiator. Low for engine cooling and high for AC. You usually find out the low speed is bad after you toast a tranny and blow a head gasket. Heat destroys automatics. Also if there was a bunch of clutch gunk in the pan when you changed the filter, the electronic switch valve unit has small cone shaped filters inside it which could have clutch bits blocking them.

If its whining its on its way put. No use wasting a bunch of money on new atf 4. It is synthetic so that isnt the cause. Drive it until it stops wirking in a gear, then park it until you get a new one. |

I should have updated you guys - sorry. Pulled the pan and the filter was sitting in the bottom. The filter on this is a snap on and going over the horrendous speed bumps at the ranch (they're really meant to channel water into ditches when it rains) too many times and it likely popped off. Figured it was now pulling fluid from higher in the pan and maybe a little occasionally air bubbles. Filter was clean otherwise, magnet was clean, fluid was clean. Put it all together and topped it back up and no more sounds. |
