According to this article these are the "10 most horrible engines ever built. Mirage owners beware.... To be fair they have the first ford V8 listed also. Feel free to discuss! B-)

I took a new Caddy V8-6-4 on a 1000 mile trip and it ran just fine. the instant cylinders active read out on the dash was fun to try keeping in 4 cylinder mode.

i disagree with the chrysler 2.2 in the list. they were crude but were bulletproof like the slant six. early Omnis and Horizons used the VW Rabbit gas engine which deserves a bad rating as it smoked as badly as a diesel, and was an early oil burner

The 5.7 diesel was a complete boat anchor, but do have to say the blocks are really beefy and make great gas motors for racing. The Suby 2.5 only sucked because they made em with pistons that have almost no skirt so you end up with piston slap and oil consumption. There is an aftermarket piston been offered for quit awhile that took care of that problem and stopped the ovaled bore wear from happening too.

Terrible list.

Any list of "Bad engines" that doesn't include a 2.7 Chrysler is a joke.

I posted this list on the Mirage forum a while ago...

"Ten Worst Engines" - Mirage Forum

Funny...Ward's listed the Ford Flathead V8 as one of the ten BEST engines of the 20th century.

Ward's Ten Best Engines of the 20th Century

We all came to the conclusion that the article is just click-bait garbage. :lol

I saw this a while back as well and thought that leaving off the Chrysler 2.7 was a big omission. It is click bait pure and simple.

Where's the Chevy Vega. Talk about a throw-away-car. 40,000 miles was about all those engines got and the only fix was to bore and sleeve them. About all they were good for was putting a V8 in them and making a racecar.

The Vega engine has to be one of the worst ideas of all time. The only standard production vehicle ever made, with aluminum cylinder walls, instead of cast iron sleeves. The Chevette did not have this anomaly, since they realized early on that it just don't work. In these type of lists, they should not use the term, "of all time." They can't possibly know every debacle of all time, since their primary goal is to produce something newsworthy, not totally factual. If you want to go way back, the Chevy 348 V8 was another stinker.

Actually some cars have the alumasil sleeves or whatever. It is just done a lot better and more uniformly than in these turds. I seem to recall reading that it never caught on here largely because of the Vega and that is it more common in Europe. This is used in small engines, especially the cheaper consumer grade ones, all the time. It seems to work pretty well all things considered but these engines are basically a throwaway when worn out. It doesn't make economic sense to bore and re-sleeve a cheap consumer grade mower, weed-eater, or chainsaw engine.

Here you go: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alusil

They are all European. Maybe this is why you hear about Audi and VW being oil burners at times.

Thanks for the input on quasi aluminum. As I recall, they didn't even bother to "sleeve" those Vega blocks. They just bored em, and tossed in the pistons. I was aware that some "non standard" production vehicles had some kind of aluminum cylinders, but these are vehicles which will receive more attention and common sense maintenance, than a "throw away" vehicle. Unfortunately, the Metro also falls into the "use and chuck" stigma. These vehicles are the worst to try experiments on, because the owners frequently buy on a budget, with nothing left over for maintenance. Any list like this, without the Vega, isn't a list at all.

some cars had initial engine offerings that did not hold up well.

the Vegas all aluminum engine was a big deal.. they actually compared it to the Porsche 928 .. and engineers stood beside the engine in joint GM and Reynolds /Alcoa msgazine ads. (career ending perhaps)

the fine handling Vega begat the Monza, Skyhawk, Starfire etc. which were available with the Iron Duke 151 - 4 and with highly successful optional V6 and small block v8s.

GM in particular had a reputation for improving someof their initially underpowered and troublesome cars after initial launch, and dropping them as soon as they became good.

As my screen name states, I am a Monza fanatic. Currently own 3 factory v8 monza coupes, had 3 vega's and one vega wagon, one starfire coupe, a spider and a mirage. The vega wagon was the only one I had that stared a Cosworth sitting in the engine compartment, lol. Never knew how it ran because I just towed to my shop and dropped a 283 in it. My 2 75 Monza towne coupes are the best handing of any of them, did need to swap to vega non-power steering box for best results and change the rear axle to a 76 so had a 7.5" axle.

Monza, does your Vega wagon have the Monza nose or the one that looks like a 70 1/2 Camaro?

I'd like to see an objective list of worst engines (to date) based on repair stats after warranty expiration . I bet you could approximate a list if Rockauto published the top selling non maintenance engine parts.. or if wrecking yards published the most common make and model of non crashed cars that are towed into their yards.
