I realised something earlier today; in Europe I haven't heard of frame horns rusting out like they do in North America so I was wondering if demand outstripped supply to the point that it would be worth my while cutting out rust free UK frame horns and shipping them to the US. If I supplied them like this what do you think they would be worth? What parts have to be removed from the car in order to get the frame horns free like this?

There may be a worthwhile market for the drivers side horn but the passenger sides don't usually rust out. |

That sounds unusual, any idea why one side is more prone to rust than the other? That's a good thing in a lot of ways, 50% of the work and 50% less on shipping (possibly). |

on a LHD passenger side (right) oil leaks from crank and cam seals tend to protect the right side floor pan from rusting. left side of cars get more salt exposure from salt trucks when parked, and slush splash from oncoming traffic. under the 15 (Canada) or 25 year import rule (US) there is probably more of a market for importing complete rust free body shells or complete cars. LHD shells would be easier to sell. Edited by suzukitom, Jan 3 2018, 04:21 PM.

I always wondered if I should have cut the horns off of the rust free 1994 or whatever I came across that someone had shot to pieces. I had originally planned to restore the car but it was pointless without the title I started to strip it for parts and was in the process of cutting it in two when the remains caught fire and quickly turned into a blazing inferno. Luckily I was able get it out without calling the fire dept and am surprised someone else didn't call. It was a bright sunny day and the sky around here turned black with smoke. The body was RUST FREE and the previous owner had shot it up thinking it was just a cheap car and that no one would want it. Unfortunately the car had sat with the windows blown out for a while and it was really wet and moldy plus mice had been in there so it was just nasty. It was a parts car at this point but it was too bad some of them went up in smoke from the fire before I was done stripping it. Do frame horns interchange between the verts and the hatches, etc? It seem the verts really rot out because of the poor drainage and that might be a use for those good horns if we come across some. Conor |

What about wheel well panels? Even though I've just had some welding done to the front floor pan on my car the wheel wells are mint inside and out and I understand that North American ones can get pretty bad, like the below.![]() (From this video) Sickening! |

the 89-94 North American Swifts/Metros that share your body style have no rust issues either in the rear wheel wells. Only the 95-00 3 door hatchback Metros/Swifts made in North America rust like shown in your picture. this is due to the factory using a double walled patch panel spot welded to the inner wheel well without rust treatment, and without weep drains. Can confirm. I've had to weld new metal around my driver's side frame horn. but the other side is still clean. |
