Should I fix mine or just buy another one?

So I have a 1990 (maybe 91). Mine is pretty trashed. What's wrong:

-bad O2 sensor (throwing code and seized in manifold with rounded head)
-exhaust system is crap from manifold to muffler (muffler is new)
-engine sounds/feels "buzzy" (this started after complete O2 failure)
-front suspension is "iffy"
-lower ball joint/control arm driver's side
-both CV axles are SHOT
-transmission shot (from when my oil fill plug backed out on the highway and splashed oil all over the place, killing the bearings...now gears 1 and 2 whir/whine, 4th has a subtle whine, thirds synchro is toast just from wear and tear making it grind and tries to pop out when shifting unless holding shifter in third when releasing the clutch)
-bad wheel bearing driver's side
-rocker panel rust
-minor floor board rust (only a few spots @ maybe 3mm max, didn't even notice until I was messing with the ignition)
-fender (major but easily replaced)
-quarter panel rust (very mild)

Not as important:

-driver's door replaced by PO, didn't switch door cylinders when he did (so key does not work on driver's side)
-steering lock pin in ignition switch seized (drilled out to save myself $300)
-headlight switch(es) ghetto replaced
-high speed wiper button broke off (but still functional, you just have to push on the inside of the housing)
-paint is crap (easily fixed)

THE GOOD:
-new clutch (not even 200 miles)
-new front brakes
-new tires

My notes: I'm only getting 44mpg regardless of speed (even before O2 went out), so I think I may need to look into an engine rebuild anyways (I was already thinking about doing it anyways). I'd like to get rid of those nasty side-of-instrument-cluster mounted headlight and wiper switches and go to a standard multi-function on the column (which started in 92?). Since I was wanting to rebuild the engine anyways (and wanting a newer design Metro), I was thinking just getting a slightly newer metro and take all the salvageable parts of my mine (basically just engine, clutch, and interior) and junk the rest.

What're your opinions (both situation and fuel economy)?

44 mpg sounds pretty good to me. That’s quite the list and it includes a trans. Time to move to another car in my opinion.
The 96 to 2001 models have air bags, little more structural crash protection and nicer interiors.
I would recommend one of those with lower miles and or well maintained. Maybe keep your car moving till you can find the right one. They will give slightly less mpg and even slightly more less mpg if you get a 4 cylinder but totally worth it.

I have another car I can and am using (03 Kia Spectra). It's mileage is plenty at 29 city, 39+ highway (during winter it gets 23-25). It's just with my job I'd rather be maximizing profits by using as little fuel as possible (which will also result in less wear and tear on my "good" car), cuz I want to save up and go on a GIANT road trip to at least see the good ol' US of A before our idiot president starts a nuclear WW3.

My 98 sedan with the 1.3 4 banger and five speed is a lot of fun to drive. It wont get 44 mpg though. I did some minor suspension work to it with lowered sport springs, new struts/shocks, all new front control arms, new strt/shock mounts, and heavy duty adjustable rear toe bars so it is low and stiff. Real fun in the corners, no more body roll or bouncing around. Surprised me on how well it handles for a fwd car. Doesnt understeer hardly at all.

Youll have time to see the US, we made it through 8 years of socialism and lack of recognition of the real threat of Islamic ISIS terrorism in the US.

You have plenty of time then. Nothing is going to happen.

If the car was rust free, I'd say put some money in it, but aren't cars usually rust free in Washington? If so, I would actually look at getting a cleaner metro or other car to put money into.

They are usually pretty rust free compared to most states (since we only sand the roads as compared to salting them), but you still get some rust from worn paint, crappy TLC standards of most people, etc. Usually rust starts with a crack, chip, or scratch and that's when it becomes cancer because people don't think about it until the situation goes AWOL.

I've made up my mind that I'm gonna be looking for a 92+ hatch so I can rid myself of the horrible '70s era dash mount switches for the "modern" multifunction steering stocks. I have a Bronco I'm hoping to trade for a "decent" sample with a couple hundred on top.
