So my car cuts out intermittently at cruising speed, and idles a little rough. The code is Faulty PCM. Does that sound right? |

Just my .02¢... If it is a 1994 it would help to know if it has advanced emissions (black box, ISC, at the back of the TB) or standard emissions (IAC), and if it's a manual or automatic... According to the FSM, ( http://geometroforum.com/topic/5044844/1/#new ) , code 51 = EGR System & REGT Sensor Circuit ... Standard Emissions 6E2-A1 ENGINE COMPONENTS WIRING DIAGRAMS DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByZnrvyffe1KV3NMSTh1SGZSSXM/edit Advanced Emissions 6E2-A2 ENGINE COMPONENTS WIRING DIAGRAMS DIAGNOSTIC CHARTS UPGRADED EMISSIONS https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByZnrvyffe1KYjVBdjllUVBabDg/edit Most likely the EGR passages are clogged... Here is good reading: http://geometroforum.com/topic/678529/1/ Edited by geogonfa, Jan 22 2018, 05:13 PM.

I don't think the pcm has a self determined failure code. |

I have a Haynes Manual. (24075) Page 6-4. Step 8. Work like a charm. Next page it just reads "PCM faulty" I'm confused, I didn't think the engine would even start with a faulty PCM. |

what code are you actually getting from the code reader/scanner? pcm faulty is usually the last possibility after all other possibilities have been checked, corrected or dismissed. Edited by MR1 Kingsbury, Jan 22 2018, 09:36 PM.

I get code 51. That's the on board diagnostic. Check engine light, a easy read. |

51 is egr, if the valve is sticking open it could cause you to stall, but usually code 51 means you have clogged egr passages, especially if they haven't been cleaned for the life of the vehicle. |

Then you have nothing, you're winging it. That book covers three different body designs and six different engines running on three different control schemes. It is probably pretty useful for changing a water pump or doing brakes, but when it comes to genuine troubleshooting it might as well be a roll of toilet paper. PCM (actually your 94 has an ECM) almost never goes bad, and if it did you'd be dead in the water. Intermittent problems are usually poor electrical connections or a failing fuel injector. Fuel injectors often stick closed while driving and then work pretty well for a while. The failing becomes more and more prevalent until they fail completely. 51 is clogged EGR, about half of all Metros have this and they're running fine. Edited by Woodie, Jan 23 2018, 08:02 AM.
