Engine bucking/braking

The car is bucking badly when the AC is on. I noticed it when I first bought it but it was only slightly at highway speeds(barely noticeable).
The second time I drove it,today, just up the road to my kids school, it was as if someone was tapping the brakes when the AC is on.
Could this be a bad compressor, slipping belt or????

Does the A/C make any type of noise while running.

What engine do you have?

How many miles are on it?

Have you done a compression test on the engine?

No noise from AC. 1.0 3 banger. 99,500 miles. I haven't done a compression test but I can. What should the numbers be? 98 3/5

Factory specs are a range of 156 to 199 psi. Engines will run lower than 156, but usually will have driveability or idling issues.

To do the compression test, follow the following steps.

All spark plugs removed.

Spark disabled. ( I normally dis connect the wire connector to the coil)

Fuel disabled ( Pull the fuel injector fuse, or unplug it)

Throttle held wide open during cranking.

Crank engine over until needle stops moving.

If at all possible watch the needle on the compression gauge to evaluate how the cylinder builds pressure.

Ok. Well I just saw your post. I'll redo the test. I
Didn't follow all the steps. I pulled all the plugs only and cranked it for about 5 seconds and got 160,170,170. That is from timing belt side to dizzy side. Soon as the downpour stops I'll redo it following your protocol.

Following your steps exactly I got 205-220-225. All 3 would initially jump in 3 large moves if the needle then slowly climb after that

Those numbers are good.

With the A/C off there is no noticeable drag on the engine?

No. it runs fine. The engine feels fine. It's my second metro and it feels the same in power as the other. I do have bad oil leaks that are going to be fixed. Probably the crank seal. There is a lot of oil on the AC compressor and a arms etc. The AC blows cold air but there are oil drips coming off of it.

Clean all the oil etc, and make sure your AC VSV is compensating for the increased load on the engine when the AC is running.

Good luck.

Thanks. What is the VSV? I'm not familiar with that. The compressor does seem to be noisy and puts a heavy load on the engine. Maybe it's just going out. It is 20 yrs old and has almost 100k on it.

If this is for your 98 or 2000, then you don't have a VSV.

It's a 98
Then you don't gave one. The older models had it to help raise the idle, to help compensate for the extra load
