Vert quarter trim mouldings; How to remove old coating

Hi, my new roof is now on, and to tidy up the trim, I want to remove what is left of the plastic coating that is on the quarter mouldings.
These are between the door and the hinge edge of the trunk lid.
They seem to have a thick black plastic coating on them, which has deteriorated and come off in parts.
I am wanting to remove what remains so I can repaint them.
I have so far tried acetone, and 3M adhesive remover with no success.
Any idea anyone?
Thanks,
Bart
