on my car,the lighter is just a plug in with a push clip that slide off when its pressed,i didnt have to do anything with the a/c switch....do yourself a favor, get the wiring harness fo that car so you don't cut the geo plug, you will thank yourslef for the 7 dollar investment and a whole lot of headaches, the aftermarket switch simply plugs into your geo wiring, then you wire the stereo according to wire color.took me all of twenty minutes to take out the radio, saude and then heatshrink the aftermarket stereo and plug, and install it.
I aslo strongly recommend ditching the metro factory speakers, they just don't cut it.....

good luck

This is USAF RIDER's brother... He has a 1991 Geo Metro. We are trying to remove the factory stereo, but not sure what steps are involved. We are trying to to remove the front bezel that I think holds the stereo in. I think you have to remove the cigarette lighter and A/c switch to be able to release the front trim piece. It appears that the ground wire on the cigarette lighter is welded on. The A/C switch does snap into place, but I need the wire behind it to disconnect so that I can pull the switch out the front, and this seems to be difficult.

My 91 Metro had no radio in it when I got it, so I'm not certain about how the factory radio is secured. The trim removal is simple. Remove the 4 knobs from the heat temp, fan etc. Look on the top of the knobs and you see a a retaining clip. Push lightly up and slide knob off. Look under the ledge of the trim bezel. Remove 2 screws from there. Remove ash tray. 3 screws hold the ash tray frame, 2 in the front bottom side, and 1 at the rear. Remove ash tray frame. Follow the cigarette lighter wires for about 6 inches. You will find a plug that disconnects. There should be enough slack on the a/c switch wires so you might not need to unplug it. If not, again, follow the wires behind the dash to the plug on the heater plenum and unplug. The trim bezel can now be moved out of the way.

I now have the bottom part free where I can pull the trim out, but the radio is stopping the top trim from pulling out. The radio face plate overlaps the front trim and stops the trim from coming off. The radio moves foward about 1/2 in, but then stops. I am not sure what is securing it in.

I took it to my local audio dealer and let them look at it.... There was a bolt on the very back center holding the radio in...Its finally out, so here goes the installation of the new one.

Just wanted to mention I just did this as well 91 vert. You dont need to remove your very fragile bezel take the 1. Screw from the side center of the glove box out there are 2 small tabs on the piece of glove box push it up pull the tabs inside then pull it down it will come out . Then the 1bolt holding the radio is a 8mm or 5/16 its tricky mIght put my hand behind the radio and pushed forward the radio moved forward giving me more room I used a ratcheting 8mm wrench after the bolt came out so did the radio. Want to add 1 small note Hanes manuals suck! Well at least for 91 radio removal.

I'm totally awesome! I swear.

If that is truly the case, then the 91's must be vastly different from the later models. On my '92, and most other Metro's after that, AFAIK, the front screws that secure your radio to the dash, are located behind the bezel, so the bezel MUST come off, in order to extract and replace the radio.

Regardless of the fact that this thread is 8.5 years old. It seems there was already and aftermarket hackjob installed with the radio front plate overlapping the metro bezel/trim. It seems that all was loose, except the rear bolt behind the radio... Personally I never re-install those... the front four behind the bezel hold quite well./

Chiming in, even though, as mentioned, this thread is super old.
89-91 has a completely different stereo situation than 92-94, or 95-01.
89-91 can use only a single DIN stereo, I've seen single DIN installed with a DIN sleeve, or shaft mount with a flat faceplate.
Single DIN fits and looks better than shaft mount, the car was designed for a single DIN.
You install the sleeve to the bezel. If you have stereo removal keys, then you can use those to release the stereo, IF the stereo you have is compatible with being released in this way. Some are not.
