I can get 37 mpg if I keep the throttle pedal to the floor and try keeping up with traffic, racing off the red lights, near 4-wheel skids to a stop, etc. These little 3/5s are capable of getting upper 50s mpg and even in rare cases into the 70's, if driven right. I have a hard time getting under 50 mpg with my current driving style. Compression check, air filter, timing check, inspect spark plugs, make sure spark plug wires aren't touching metal, check under the distributor cap for cracks/moisture, use 87 octane or better... If the temperature isn't about in the middle regardless if outside air temperature, then your thermostat is most likely stuck open, as mine was. This will kill gas mileage and emit dirty exhaust. |

What JM said. Engine health is a big contributor. Worn clutch? Clutch slippage would decrease mileage. Lead foot? If you are expecting big car performance you will get poopoo mileage. For best mileage, a light accelerator foot and a gallon of patience is the best remedy. Roaring away from stops and screeching to your next stop will kill mileage almost as fast as low compression. Tire pressure? Make sure your tire pressure is at least at the maximum cold pressure. Some around here run theirs over-pressure but I don't recommend it. Sticky brakes? Could be you have a sticky caliper that is slowing you down some. Start with that compression test and bring the results back and list them. We can start there and rule out the other possiblilties one at a time. |
