I have a 1997 Metro that have an oil leak but I am stumped at what would cause it. I cleaned the area with brake cleaner then drove it 30 miles when I got home I took this picture. I have marked where the fresh oil has showed up. I was all clean to start with. There is also a shadow look that is oil running down the side of the transmission. Is the Motor oil leaking from that clutch shaft on the top of the transmission? I would have thought it would be much thicker than motor oil.
Thanks for your help!

Shane

First we have to determine if it's engine oil or trans fluid. Start by removing the distributor cap and see if there is any oil in there. Then check the distributor O-ring where it inserts into the side of the head. Also check all areas above the oily area like the valve cover gasket.

Follow JM's advice above about the distributor. That is definitely and indication of an oil leak at the dist. If there is oil inside the cap, I can walk you through the repair. If there is none inside but a drop of oil on the base flange of the dist. just below the bottom timing adjust bolt, then you have a leaky dist. "o"ring seal. This is the easiest to repair, just remove the "o" ring and take it to your closest auto parts store and match it up to one they have. Re-install "o" ring, re-install dist. No sweat.

I vote distributor also.
Looks like it is dripping from the cap to the clutch release lever.

My oil leak is so bad I have to put 2 quarts in 1.000 miles! :( Should I take my car to a mechanic ASAP or should I take my time and try to fix it at home with friend's help?

Sounds like your camshaft seal or front crank seal might be leaking. Let us know where you see the most fresh oil. Either one of those is doable on your own in a couple of hours. :thumb

The distributor O-ring is Dorman part # 64213

You can buy them from the Kragen Auto Parts chain.

A 5 pack is around $3.00

Thanks everyone for the help.
Sure enough the bottom timing adjusting bolt is wet with oil. So what is the process to change that O-ring?

To change this O-ring are these the steps?

1. Remove distributer cap.
2. Mark the rotor at TDC #1
3. Remove two timing adjusting screws.
4. Wiggle the distributer loose from the engine.
5. Remove and replace O-ring. (Does the O-Ring get lubed for installation?)
6. Replace all items in reverse order.

Am I missing something?
Is this the part for the repair?

I was thinking that it was coming from the distributor/cam. I wish the top of MY tranny looked so clean! I won't post a picture of it - it will make you lose your lunch.

rr87 has a valve cover gasket leak as well as a distributor O-ring leak.
The 4 'washers' under the castle nuts need to be tightened a little.
Or, you'll have to swap out the gasket.
The oil pan was put on with the old Permatex Orange.
You should never use that. I stopped using that when Permatex Ultra Black came out.
Get some Permatex Ultra Gray, pull that pan and put a paper thin coat on the block and the pan.

Also your front main oil seal and cam seal are probably leaking.

Better plan on getting some parts for that engine and redoing it in the Spring.

The Metro I did a couple of months ago is identical, and you can sleep under it without a drop of oil anywhere. That tells me it's a well designed engine, once you get it back up to snuff.
